An E-C Translation Report On The Extended Mind:the Power Of Thinking Outside The Brain （Excerpts）

This is a practice report on English-Chinese translation of academic texts.Translation text is excerpted from The Extended Mind: The Power of Thinking Outside the Brain written by Annie Murphy Paul.The book is a cognitive science work that teaches us how to benefit from thinking outside the brain.In the context of globalization,scholars gradually advocate academic borderless.In order to keep up with the latest international scientific research results,the translation of academic works is of great importance.However,academic texts are characterized by many professional terms,complex sentence structure and rigorous language expression.Therefore,this translation task not only requires the translator to understand the relevant academic background,but also needs to have a high language comprehensive ability,which is an excellent opportunity to improve the translator’s translation level.The report,taking the translation of selected parts of The Extended Mind as case analysis,mainly discusses the translation difficulties of academic texts from the aspects of vocabulary,sentence pattern and discourse,and summarizes the proper translation methods and experience gained in translation practice.At the lexical level,the translator adopts transliteration plus annotation and the choice of the word meaning to solve the problem of translating proper nouns and polysemy respectively;at the syntactic level,the translations of complex sentence patterns and inanimate-subject sentences are dealt with the methods of structure adjustment and shifts of subjects;at the level of discourse,the translator deals with dashes by means of addition to achieve discourse cohesion.This report is about the exploration of the translation of academic monographs,and has made a certain contribution to the scientific research in this field.However,some problems encountered in the translation process need to be further solved.
