An English-Chinese Translation Report On It’s Better This Way（Prologue And Chapters 1-4）

This is an English-Chinese translation report and the selected translation text is Debbie Macomber’s novel,It’s Better This Way.The novel mainly expounds the love story of Julia and Heath.Julia and Heath have both experienced divorce.After experiencing the obstruction of their children and mutual doubts about this relationship,they suddenly understand that everything is the best arrangement.In this report,the translator mainly selects the prologue and chapters 1 to 4 of the novel as translation materials.These chapters mainly describe the story of how Julia and Heath meet and become familiar with each other.The translator chooses this novel for translation in order to convey the positive,courageous,and hardworking spirit of the novel to readers.In the report,two types of difficulties in the translation process are summarized,namely,the difficulties at lexical level and the difficulties at syntactical level.Facing these difficulties,the translator also summarizes the corresponding translation methods to solve them.At the lexical level,there are three main difficulties in translation: Firstly,there are many words that can be converted in the novel,such as the translation of nouns into verbs.This difficulty is mainly solved by the method of conversion.Secondly,in the process of translation,the choice of meaning of some polysemous words is very important for the translation of the whole sentence.In order to make the translation more complete,the method of choice of word meaning is adopted to deal with this difficulty.Thirdly,it is the translation of prepositions.When prepositions in English are translated into Chinese,their parts of speech or connotations may be expanded.Therefore,the translator adopts amplification to solve such difficulties.The translator categorizes the difficulties at syntactical level into three points: sentence with action descriptions,sentence with portraiture descriptions,and sentence with attributive clauses.The translation method adopted by each of them is turning phrases words into clauses,using four-character phrases,and division.Finally,the translator summarizes experience and limitations in the report.Through this translation practice,the limitations need to be improved,and the gained experience is expected to provide reference for other translators.
