The letter genre,as a kind of English practical essays that takes from and applies to life,is not only an important tool for interpersonal communication,but also a key content of the college entrance examination.But in actual teaching classes,letter writing teaching has not been taken seriously.Therefore,based on the predecessor’s researches on the writing through reading model,this research applies the model to the high school English letter writing teaching to explore its feasibility and effectiveness.This research chooses two parallel classes from No.1 middle school of Dalian Economic and Technological Development Zone,one of which is the experimental class(EC)and the other is the control class(CC).The EC implemented writing through reading model,while the CC is taught with the traditional reading and writing teaching method.Meanwhile,the EC strengthened the training of content points,vocabulary and grammar,and text connection.This research mainly answers two questions.First,what effect does the writing through reading teaching model have on high school students’ letter writing ability? This question includes three sub-questions.That is,what effect does writing through reading model have on the content points,the richness and accuracy of vocabulary and grammar,and textual connection in letter writing? Second,what effect does the writing through reading teaching model have on high school students’ letter writing attitudes? This question also consist of three sub-questions.That is,what effect does writing through reading model have on the cognition,emotion,and behavioral tendency of letter writing? This research adopts a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods.Quantitative research analyzes and compares the differences in letter writing ability between EC and CC before and after the experiment,and qualitative research deeply explores the changes in the participants’ letter writing attitudes.The research results show that the application and implementation of writing through reading model in the high school letter writing has feasibility and effectiveness,which are mainly reflected in two aspects.Firstly,the writing through reading model has improved the participants’ letter writing ability.We can find that their ability on the content points,the accuracy and richness of vocabulary and grammar,and textual connection of letter writing have improved effectively.Secondly,the writing through reading model has changed the participants’ attitudes towards letter writing.We can find that their cognition,emotion and behavioral tendency towards letter writing have all been positively changed.This research has a certain reference value for high school English letter teaching.Teachers should pay more attention to the input of reading language knowledge and the writing output after reading input and they should design teaching activities to promote writing rationally.
