The source text of this translation practice task is excerpted from the third chapter of Offshore Petroleum Drilling and Production by Doctor.Sukumar Laik, containing more than 15,000 words. This source text mainly introduces the installing and operating principles for three types of offshore oil/gas drilling structures and their subtypes. It belongs to the typical informative text of petroleum science and technology with relatively strong expertise and practicality. The difficulties in translation mainly lie in the understanding of technical principles and professional knowledge involved in technical writing, and the widely used technical terms, nominalized structures and prepositional phrases, passive sentences and complex sentences,as well as non-text expression forms such as diagrams and formulas. In this translation practice report, the author takes the “functional equivalence” as the theorical basis, and selects typical cases from levels of terms, phrases, sentences and style for analysis and summarizes applicable translation strategies. For example, respectively convert nominalized and prepositional phrases into Chinese verb-object structures and compact sentence patterns;convert passive voice into Chinese active ones, notional passive and subject-omitted sentences;translate complex sentences by following the subject-predicate structure and restructuring the syntax. This translation practice task has enabled the translator to acquire more about the professional knowledge in the field of English for petroleum science and technology, the differences between English and Chinese in structure and expression,as well as the corresponding translation strategy.Although this task still has some limitations, the translator hopes to provide some reference for relevant translation practice on this basis, and further accumulate practical experience in petroleum English translation, laying a foundation for the future career.
