A Report On The Translation Of Cold War Energy:a Transnational History Of Soviet Oil And Gas（Excerpt）

This translation report is takes Part Two of Cold War Energy: A Transnational History of Soviet Oil and Gas（Excerpt）as the practice task,which is an informative text,concerning oil trade,geopolitics and history.This excerpt is meant to help the translator draw on her translation skills and learn more professional terms in global oil trade.The whole translation process is guided by the three principles of Vermeer’s Skopos Theory.The translator lists typical cases for exploration and makes appropriate use of translation strategies in the field of oil trade history in terms of lexical,syntactic and discourse levels.The translation process is divided into three parts: pre-translation,whilst-translation and post-translation,including preparing materials,understanding the original text,practicing translation of the text,and proofreading to ensure translation quality.Trados and memo Q are major tools in the process.In the section of case study,the translator analyzes typical problems encountered in the translation process,which include three aspects: passive voice sentences,complex sentences and discourse features.In conformity with the Chinese way of expression,the translator puts passive sentences into active ones or free translation with passive meaning accordingly.For attributive clauses,the translator adopts prepositive and postpositive translation.As the source text contains many paragraphs,the translator uses logical cohesion and lexical cohesion.Through this translation practice,the translator acquires more special terms and expressions in the field of oil and gas.Although this report still has some deficiencies,such as lack of knowledge in related historical facts and inflexible use of translation skills,the translator hopes to improve her ability to understand academic English and command authentic Chinese expressions before she becomes a good translator.
