Background: Cognitive failures not only has a negative impact on college students’ mental health, but also is closely related to individual learning efficiency, work efficiency and even life safety.Previous studies rarely discussed the mechanism underlying the relationship between personality and cognitive failures. Therefore,it is necessary to build a theoretical model to explore the occurrence and development mechanism of cognitive failure among college students. Objective: The purpose of this study is to explore the influencing mechanism of sleep quality and mindfulness in the relationship between neuroticism and cognitive failures, and to further analyze the effect of auricular point pressing therapy on improving sleep quality, and on lowering the occurrence of cognitive failures among college students.Method: A total of 651 valid subjects were selected from a university in Hunan Province. The Chinese version of the neuroticism subscale of the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire-RShort Scale, the Cognitive Failures Questionnaire, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale were used to carry out the test on the participants.Data were processed and analyzed using SPSS18.0,Mplus7.4,and Process. Moreover,a total of 70 cases of college students with insomnia from a university in Hunan Province were recruited. The patients were randomly divided into the experimental group(related auricular point group)and the control group(non-related auricular point group),each with 30 cases. The auricular point pressing intervention experiment was carried out.One ear was pressed once, and do treatment to the other ear after 3 days.Three days was a period of treatment, and there were 4periods of treatment,a total of 12 days.Data were processed and analyzed using SPSS18.0.Result: 1.College students’ neuroticism, cognitive failures, sleep quality and mindfulness differ in gender, grade, only child or not and place of origin.2.Neuroticism was positively correlated with cognitive failures(P<0.01),and negatively correlated with sleep quality and mindfulness(P<0.01).Cognitive failures was negatively correlated with sleep quality and mindfulness(P<0.01).Sleep quality was positively correlated with mindfulness(P < 0.01).3.College students’ neuroticism can significantly predict the level of cognitive failures.4.Sleep quality plays a partial mediating role in the influence of neuroticism on cognitive failures.5.Mindfulness moderates the relationship between sleep quality and cognitive failures, and then moderates the indirect effect of "neuroticism→sleep quality→cognitive failures".6.In the auricular point pressing intervention experiment, the results showed that there was no significant difference between the two groups in the indicators before intervention(P > 0.05).After the intervention,in the experimental group, there were significant differences in subjective sleep quality(P < 0.01),sleep latency(P < 0.01),habitual sleep efficiency(P < 0.01),sleep disturbances(P < 0.05),daytime dysfunction(P <0.01)and global average score of sleep quality(P < 0.01),and the score after the intervention was significantly higher than that before the intervention. However,in the control group, there was significant difference only in sleep dysfunction(P < 0.01),and the score after the intervention was significantly higher than that before the intervention.Between the experimental group and the control group after intervention, there were significant differences in sleep duration(P < 0.05),habitual sleep efficiency(P < 0.01),daytime dysfunction(P < 0.01),global score of sleep quality(P < 0.01),distractibility(P < 0.01),interpersonal blunders(P < 0.01),memory for names(P <0.05),and global score of cognitive failures(P < 0.01).The score of the experimental group was significantly higher than the control group in sleep duration, habitual sleep efficiency, daytime dysfunction, and global score of sleep quality. The score of the experimental group was significantly lower than the control group in distractibility, interpersonal blunders, memory for names, and global score of cognitive failures. Conclusion: This study found that sleep quality plays a mediating role in the influence of neuroticism on mobile phone addiction cognitive failures, and mindfulness plays a moderating role in the relationship between sleep quality and cognitive failures. Moreover, the experimental study further verified the effectiveness of auricular point pressing therapy on improving insomnia, and on lowering the occurrence of cognitive failures among college students.
