| Henri Vieuxtemps,a celebrated Belgian musician,established his virtuosic repute in the transitional period in the European history of Romantic music in the second half of nineteenth century.A pupil of August Beriot,Vieuxtemps earned wide praises from his contemporaries as a prodigy.The essay aims to argue how Vieuxtemps’ early musical education and traveling experience shaped his unique compositional and performing style,which synthesized the prevailing artistic styles and musical schools of his time.Vieuxtemps’ virtuosic training,mainly based on the musical pedagogy of Viotti’s French School and of the French-Belgian School founded by Beriot.Later in his professional career,Vieuxtemps absorbed the technical virtuosity of Nicolas Paganini and the compositional style of Beethoven.Vieuxtemps was widely known for his authentic emotion and flawless technique in his performances during his age,nevertheless,his musical legacy is easily overlooked by contemporary scholars.The essay hopes to reintroduce the work and life of Vieuxtemps into the Chinese context in order to enrich the repertoire of Romantic music studies. |
