Jeong Yak-yong is a well-known Politician,Litterateur,and great Practical Knowledge thinker of the Korea’s Yi Dynasty in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.He is also the ancient Korean scholar with the most works on Chinese characters,Many Chinese scholars in the mainland have studied and commented on his thoughts and literature,but few studies on the study of his achievement in the Analects.China Taiwan’s scholars have paid much attention to Jeong Yak-yong’s "The Analects of Confucius",but they also analyze it from a philosophical perspective,Kim yen Chung’s" Jeong Chashan’s Analects of Ancient and Modern Annotations"(1987)is the only book with the main subject of "Analects of Ancient and Modern Annotations",but it mainly focuses on the 175 original meanings before the main text of the book.Throughout Jeong Yak-yong’s works,the interpretation and review of the Chinese Confucian orthodox "Thirteen Classics" accounted for the main subjects,including"The Analects of Ancient Annotations","The Essentials of Mencius","Lecture Notes of the Book of Songs","Ancient Explanation of Shangshu "and so on.These exemplified opus contain Jeong Yak-yong’s rich exegetical results,and at the same time,leave a lot of valuable explanations of words in ancient books to future generations.Jeong Yak-yong’s "Ancient and Modern Annotations on Analects" has quoted the Annotations of Chinese Han Confucianism,Song Confucianism,Ming and Qing Confucianism,Japanese ancient study,and ancient Korean Confucianism.Besides that Jeong Yak-yong also added his own opinions.According to that,Jeong Yak-yong broke through the thoughts of Zhu xi which was the Mainstream ideology of ancient Korea,and became the epitome of annotations on Analects in Yi Dynasty.This paper mainly studies the exegesis contents and exegesis methods of"Ancient and Modern Annotations on Analects",and then the exegesis characteristics of Jeong Yak-yong’s Analects study.Ultimately analyzes his thought of confucian classics which is reflected in the exegesis of this book.The exegesis contents of "Ancient and Modern Annotations on Analects" is very rich,mainly It can be summarized into seven aspects:the evaluation of old annotations,interpretation of word meanings,analysis of the period and the comma,explanation of the meaning of Analects,explanation of grammar,description of rhetoric and distinguish different edition.Jeong Yak-yong used three exegesis methods in this book:explanation of pronunciation,explanation of character pattern and explanation of character meaning.Based on the analysis of the content and method of the exegesis,the four exegetical features of Jeong Yak-yong’s "Ancient and Modern Annotations on Analects" are summarized:the first point is based on a relatively objective stand,quoting and Judging the annotations of different Confucianists;the second point is that paying attention to the same examples which are consistent with the same grammar principles from other classical literature;the third point is to show Jeong Yak-yong’s respect for Confucius and the Analects during the interpretation of the scriptures;the fourth point is to compromise between the annotations of Chinese Han Confucianism and Song Confucianism.In consideration of Jeong Yak-yong’s exegesis clearly serves the truth and argument,so this article ultimately analyzes his ideology of confucian classics which is reflected in the exegesis of this book.There are three philosophical thoughts that Jeong Yak-yong advocated.First,do filial piety and forgiveness.Second,support or oppose of Zhu Xi’s philosophical thoughts.Last but most important,practical ideology of seeking evidence and emphasizing practice which is Jeong Yak-yong’s most fundamental pursuit of Confucian classics.
