The core problem of traditional Metaphysics is the original problem of the world, and the Ethics established on this basis is deeply influenced by this philosophical theme, and the discussion of ethical issues such as life value also has a strong Metaphysical meaning. That is,its task is to seek the ultimate good or purpose.Dewey believes that this pursuit of the ultimate good or purpose has no realistic significance in our real world, because it not only distracts us from the examination of the consequences and the use of reason to create the purpose. It also leads us to ignore the existing conditions of reality and subordinate the “present” to a rigid and abstract “future”.In the face of these problems,Dewey put forward a new solution: to put the problem of “good” on the basis of the real world, that is,on the basis of “situation” to study. The situation is turbulent, uncertain and dangerous, which hinders the smooth progress of our practice. In order to break this obstacle,we need to “inquiry” the uncertain situation and find out the problem. On this basis,we construct a “purpose in thinking” based on this situation that needs to be improved. This “purpose in thinking” is different from the fixed purpose in traditional philosophy. It is not set beyond practical activities, but constructed on the premise that it can be used to change the current situation. It is a plan for the future. In this way,in Dewey’s philosophy,“good” gets rid of the supremacy and transcendentalism set by traditional philosophy, and has more realistic and practical connotations.
