Vocabulary is the foundation of language learning,which is useful in promoting the comprehensive ability of language.With the rapid development of modern education and information technology,a teaching mode based on multimodal theory arises,and is applied to various types of teaching activities.Multimodal teaching advocates the proper use of multimodalities,such as text typesetting,pictures,sound,video,gesture and body language,etc.so as to stimulate students’ multiple sensory learning reactions.This study is to explore a simple and effective multimodal vocabulary teaching mode in junior middle school English classroom.It is expected to help the students understand English vocabulary better and to improve their comprehensive understanding ability of vocabulary through a long-time observation of the classroom,the matching between multimodal teaching activities and certain teaching procedure,and the online lexical test of students in junior middle school.During the exploration,the present study is supposed to give answers to the following three questions:(1)which common modalities are suitable for junior middle school English vocabulary teaching?(2)How to use different modalities effectively in different steps of vocabulary teaching?(3)In what way can multimodal vocabulary teaching improve junior middle school students’ comprehensive understanding of vocabulary?The research subjects were 122 students who participated in the teaching experiment.They were from classes A and B in grade two of a middle school in Wanzhou District of Chongqing.Class A(61 students)was the experimental class,which applied the multimodal vocabulary teaching method,while class B(61 students)was the controlled class,using the traditional English vocabulary teaching mode.During 16 class hours of teaching experiment,multimodalities were matched with vocabulary teaching,the experimental class adopted multimodal vocabulary teaching mode so as to help junior middle school students have a deeper understanding of English vocabulary and improve their comprehensive vocabulary understanding ability.At the end of each period,vocabulary testing software Quizlet was used to assist the multimodal vocabulary test,and the test results were analyzed and processed.The purpose of the post-test was to designed to testify whether the scores of the control class and the experimental class have changed and whether the vocabulary scores have been significantly improved,so as to verify whether the multimodal teaching mode was effective for junior middle school English vocabulary teaching.Based on the analysis of the final scores of the two classes,in discourse practice,the average score of 71.80 in the experimental class was higher than that of 70.16 in the controlled class,in Quizlet test,the average score of 89.75 in the experimental class was higher than that of 79.75 in the controlled class.The data showed: firstly,the common modes were suitable for junior middle school in English class including audio,video,text,game,tone,and action and so on.Secondly,audio and text modes could be used in the step of vocabulary presentation,vocabulary teaching and testing.Besides,it could match different modes according to different parts of speech,such as nouns were matched to objects,texts and picture modes,while verbs were collocated with modes of videos,texts and actions.Adjectives were collocated with pictures,texts and mood modes.Thirdly,the multimodal teaching mode improved students’ interest in English vocabulary.Multimodal teaching mode could mobilize students’ multiple senses and improve the efficiency of vocabulary memory and comprehensive understand ability.Fourthly,the multimodal vocabulary test could provide students with effective information and helped them reduce the burden of memory.The test results of multimodal teaching mode were higher than those of the traditional English vocabulary teaching mode,which showed that multimodal teaching mode could better help students improve their learning interest and has achieved better understanding.The research results can draw the following teaching implication to English vocabulary teaching in junior middle school.In order to enhance the memory of vocabulary and improve vocabulary understanding,teachers should pay more attention to the use of proper multimodalities,develop multimodal resources,and create a multimodal vocabulary teaching atmosphere.When teaching vocabulary,teachers should use different modalities appropriately and link the multimodal teaching model to the existing teaching model to teach vocabulary.This study applies the multimodal teaching mode to the practice of English vocabulary teaching in the junior middle school,which can provide a new way of thinking for foreign language teaching especially for English vocabulary teaching.
