| China’s international sports events is burgeoning in 21 st century.After the 2008 Beijing Olympics,China has successively hosted various international events such as the Nanjing Youth Olympic Games and the Guangzhou Asian Games.The Beijing Winter Olympics and Hangzhou Asian Games will be held in 2022.Beijing will be the only city that holds both the Summer Olympic Games and the Winter Olympic Games.For the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics,President Xi has proposed four hosting principles,that is,“to host a green,inclusive,open and clean Beijing 2022 Games”.“Green Olympics” idea is fully aligned with President Xi’s governance philosophy on ecological civilization construction,which shows Chinese wisdom and reflects China’s concern over the common destiny of mankind.The green principle,green programmes and practical actions should be seen and valued by the international community.Therefore,the publicity of the “Green Olympics” concept is very important,but there are few studies to it.Meanwhile,relevance-adaptation theory has been widely used in translation practice,but it is rarely applied in the field of sports.This thesis makes appropriate adjustments to the relevance-adaptation theory to make it in line with the actual situation of sports events publicity,and the further relevance-adaptation translation mode has been conceived.In this mode,the translator,as a language intermediary,needs to accurately infer the meaning of the original text and the views and emotional attitudes the original news author wants to convey before he translates;In the language producing process,the translator needs to adjust the language to the targeted readers’ cognitive environment and language environment.In other word,he must arouse the readers’ interest and make it easy for them to understand the views and emotional attitudes the original news author conveys.This thesis studies the Green Olympics publicity news materials on the official website of Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics from the perspective of relevance-adaptation translation mode,with the aim to answer the following questions:1.How to understand the original text and infer the author’s communicative intention according to the context? 2.How to make language choices,adapt to the targeted readers and translate accurately? 3.Whether the concept of the “Green Olympics” is effectively disseminated?Through a detailed analysis of the vocabulary,phrases,sentences and discourses in the news text of the Green Olympics publicity,the following conclusions are drawn:1.Although the Green Olympics publicity news materials on the official website covers all aspects of the event with a large number of information,the relevance-adaptation translation mode can provide a good guidance for the publicity translation.2.The difficulty in translation lies in the decoding of the original text.The translator needs to make contextual assumptions in the Chinese context and infer the text intention which includes informative intention and communicative intention.3.The translator needs to make linguistic choices to adapt to the target readers’ language habits,thinking habits,understanding ability and aesthetic expectation.In the process of translation,translators can flexibly adopt a variety of translation skills,such as literal translation,free translation,omission,amplification,division,generalization,concretization,part-of-speech conversion,etc.4.The concept of the “Green Olympics” is effectively disseminated. |
