Lucretius is a representative Epicurus school, his book "the theory of property" is one of the most important philosophical works in ancient Rome,he is the main purpose of writing the book, will be the soul of a man free from terrible religious bondage, get rid of the religious ignorance, inspired by the human mind, preach atheism thoughts.Lucretius believed that superstition keeps people away from the truth and destroys people's happiness. The fundamental reason for people to pursue religion is the fear of death and the fear of being punished after their bad behavior in life. Therefore,Lucretius realized that his task was to dispel the terrible atmosphere brought by religion and superstition, and let people correctly view life and death, suffering and joy,and the immortality of the human soul by poetic enlightenment through clear, sweet and easy to understand poetry and familiar Greek fairy tales.Lucretius left a deep impression on the history of religious critical thought in his own way. This paper attempts to explore the essence of human soul from Lucretius' "On the Nature of Things" and to find the destination of the soul. This paper is divided into four parts. The first part elaborates Lucretius' view of "the soul is mortal" and demonstrates that it is unnecessary for living people to worry about the punishment after death. The second part elaborates the "Acron Abyss" by Lucretius, and demonstrates why living people worry about the punishment after death. The third part elaborates Lucretius' idea about the function and vision of the soul, and reveals his idea that "life needs philosophy".The fourth part expounds the influence of Lucretius on the later generations, especially on the enlightenment philosophy of 18 th century French materialism.Through the discussion of four parts, this paper further analyzes Lucretius' thoughts about the soul, points out its shortcomings and limitations, and deepens people's thinking about life and death.
