Benjamin’s article The Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction written in the 1930 s discussed the phenomenon of large-scale copying of artworks brought by science and technology since the 19 th century, and the new changes in art brought about by this phenomenon. However,in the postmodernist period, the conceptual art that emerged after the 1960 s has the characteristic of non-copyability,which is in contradiction with Benjamin’s theory of "mechanical Reproduction".This article discusses this contradiction in two parts, the first is the non-copy phenomenon of conceptual art and the post-mechanical copy era.The postmodernist period in which conceptual art is located has surpassed the overall characteristics of the "mechanical reproduction era" discussed by Benjamin, and belongs to the "post-mechanical reproduction era";and the reason why conceptual art cannot be reproduced is its concept-first characteristic and dematerialization. The phenomenon. The second is the research part of the dematerialization phenomenon of conceptual art.The phenomenon of dematerialization has different degrees and manifestations in different schools of conceptual art, including conceptual art, performance art, process art, land art,and other dematerialization phenomena. This phenomenon is related to the display of conceptual art. There is a contradictory or unified relationship between the collection, the transmission of ideas and their own demands;and the emergence of this phenomenon is closely related to the demands of conceptual art and the postmodernist cultural thoughts and environment since the 1960 s.At the end of the article,it also expands and analyzes the phenomenon of dematerialization of art after the 1960s and even the contemporary era.
