A Study Of Imagery In The Novels Of Miguel Angel Asturias

Miguel Angel Asturias,the winner of the 1967 Nobel Prize for literature,is the founder of magic realism in Latin America and is known as the "father of magic realism".His novel creation is rooted in Latin America,introduces the images of nature,death and religion into the novel,observes the essence of Indian life with a realistic attitude,looks at the contradictions of colonial society with a critical eye,establishes his magical realism creation style with a mature narrative technique,shows the loneliness and dilemma of Latin America under the Indian primitive thinking,and completes the integration of magic and reality.This paper focuses on the text of the novel.Based on the close reading of the text,focusing on the fate of the Indian nation outlined in the novel,this paper selects the natural images symbolizing the will of "anti aggression" under the "man beast" transformation mode in Indian primitive thinking,the death images showing and implying the "massacre" of the Indian nation and the Latin American people under the dictatorship,and the religious images figuring the "invisibility" of American culture under colonial aggression,It tries to span the space-time and cultural differences between the original work and Latin American literature and culture,grasp the cultural connotation of the work through the language and image of the work,the historical and social background,and then analyze the author’s complex emotion about the tragic fate of the Indian nation,the reflection on the reality of Latin American dictatorship society,the pursuit of the meaning of life,and the confidence in the reconstruction of Latin American national culture under the mixed culture.
