There are 8 cross-border ethnic minorities in Northwest China, specifically:Hui,Uygur,Kazakh,Kirgiz,Tajik,Uzbek,Russian and Tatar. The border areas where the 8 cross-border ethnic groups mainly distribute are not only strategic areas for national defense, but also the frontier of "One Belt And One Road"construction. As an important member of the Chinese national community, the population development of the cross-border ethnic groups is the embodiment of the common prosperity and development of all ethnic groups. The study of the population situation of the transboundary ethnic groups in Northwest China is helpful for us to understand and grasp the characteristics and trends of its population development more clearly, which have great significance for maintaining the stability and development of border areas, promoting communication and exchanges of various ethnic groups, and forging a sense of community of the Chinese nation.Based on the three national census data, the census data of Xinjiang Autonomous Region, the population statistics data of various countries published by the United Nations Development Program and the World Bank, this paper adopts the methods of literature analysis, statistical modeling, comparative analysis, and other theories of demography and ethnodemography as the guidance.Firstly, this paper analyzes the current situation and changing characteristics of the population development of 8 cross-border ethnic groups in Northwest China, and makes a comparative study with the development level of the overseas population. Then, the comprehensive evaluation index of population development is constructed to further compare and analyze the development level of the cross-border ethnic groups at home and abroad. Finally, from the perspective of demography, this paper selects indicators such as the degree of interembedding of spatial geographical distribution of population, the rate of population mobility and the rate of intermarriage among ethnic groups to quantify the communication and integration of the cross-border ethnic groups in Northwest China for the first time. The main conclusions are as follows:First,in the first decade of the 21st century, the total population of the trans-boundary ethnic groups in northwest China increased moderately, and the quality of the population improved significantly, but the differences among ethnic groups were significant.Among the 8 ethnic groups, the Russians and Uzbeks have the highest level of population development, followed by the Tatar and Hui,the Uyghurs and Kazaks are at the middle level, and the Kirgiz and Tajik are relatively backward. In the past ten years, the population development level of 8 cross-border ethnic groups has been continuously improved.Among them, the Kirgiz and Tajik grew the fastest, followed by the Uygur and Kazak, both exceeding the national average and the average level of ethnic minorities.Second, the population development of China is at middle level compared with that of the main nationality countries in the northwest. The comprehensive level of population development is higher in Russia,China is behind Russia and Kazakhstan, and higher than the other countries in Central Asia. From 2000 to 2015,the population development level of all countries has been continuously improving, and China is one of the fastest growing countries.Third, there are some similarities between the population development of the cross-border nationalities in Northwest China and the overseas countries, but the cross-border nationalities are affected by the overall population development level of their respective countries, and there are also great differences in population structure, fertility level, education level and other aspects.Fourth, the communication and exchanges among the ethnic groups in northwest China have been developing steadily in a more comprehensive and in-depth way,but there are significant differences among the ethnic groups. The Hui ethnic group and the Russian ethnic group have a low degree of segregation,a high rate of population mobility and inter-ethnic marriage, which are higher than the national average level. The population mobility rate and inter-ethnic intermarriage rate of Uyghur,Kazak and other cross-border ethnic groups with large populations in northwest China are lower than the average level of ethnic minorities, and the improvement of population education level plays a positive role in promoting the above aspects.
