During the period of the Republic of China, the middle school history textbooks compiled by the Chinese ushered in the opportunity and spring of development.Major bookstores and publishing organizations began to compile textbooks according to the national government's continuously updated middle school history curriculum standards. As a major emerging capitalist country in modern times, the United States has played an increasingly important role in Sino-US exchanges and international affairs. As a result, content related to American history has become an important content in middle school history textbooks. The thesis is based on the study of middle school history textbooks in the Chinese Republic period[1912-1949].By looking through the American-related parts in textbooks,it aims to analyze the American images portrayed within under different historical circumstances. Then,an analysis is carried out to illustrate how textbooks influence the construction process of American image and the recognition process of domestic people towards America.Accordingly, the following aspects are further discussed:The introduction part first gives definition to “Republic of China”,“middle school history textbook” and “American image”.Then it gives a literature review of the previous studies on middle school history textbook in the Chinese Republic period and country images depicted in textbook. It also clarifies the background, thought and research method of the thesis. The first part of the thesis discusses the development process of middle school history textbooks and the general situation of American history compilation during the Republic of China. It mainly starts from three aspects: the origin and development of middle school history textbooks, the selection and positioning of American history in various editions of history curriculum standards, and the overall situation of American history compilation in the textbooks. The second part of the thesis begins to study the concrete content in textbooks and analyzes how American image is constructed in the textbook from different angles. In terms of natural image, the United States is a young immigrant country with a “large area and sparsely populated, ethnically integrated” country;in terms of political image, the United States is a unified country with a free and democratic republic that has gradually developed from nationalism to nationalism;in terms of economic image, the United States It is a capitalist economic power from a “colonial”to a “superpower”;in terms of its diplomatic image, the United States is a "world steward" from isolationism to globalism. The third part of the thesis interprets the American image constructed in the middle school history textbooks during the Chinese Republic period in a holistic view.Aimed at exploring the development process of American image in different settings, the thesis analyzes the America-related parts in history textbook from three dimensions: the image of the United States in different periods, the image of the United States in Sino-US exchanges, and the evolution of the image of the United States in international relations. After the deep analysis as above illustrates, the thesis tries to figure out the drivers lying behind which shape the construction of American image in textbook. These drivers are found to stem from government policies, historical era demand as well as the compilers. Moreover, the relationship between American image construction and China's self-recognition towards its own nation is further explored.Merits and demerits of American image construction in textbook is remarked, and its immediate and far-reaching significance is explained as well. The conclusion part gives a summary to the whole thesis. It summarizes Chinese people's recognition process towards America in the Chinese Republic period and offers some reflections on the compilation of history textbook, construction of country image as well as implementation of core literacy for the present-day society.
