Under the policy of “One belt,One road”,Chinese enterprises boom overseas.High vocational colleges undertake the task of cultivating foreign vocational talents who both understand Chinese culture and master specialized skills.Cultivating college foreign students in China is one of the main ways to accomplish this task. For individuals, adaptation is the perquisite of growth and development.Psychological adaptation is fundamental to mental health. What about the psychological adaptation of foreign students from high vocational colleges? How to improve their psychological adaptability? These are challenges high vocational colleges face. This paper includes two researches.Research One is the survey of the psychological adaptation of foreign students from higher vocational colleges in China. The cross-cultural psychological adaptation scale-"Zung's Depression Self-Rating Scale" is used to investigate 116 foreign students in a higher vocational college in Taizhou City, Jiangsu Province.Considering their cross-cultural background of life and study, the foreign students investigated indicating psychological maladjustment are surveyed again with “Adaptation Stress Scale for International Students” to investigate their cross-cultural pressure and explore whether there is a link between psychological maladjustment and the cross-cultural pressure.Research Two is the intervention on the psychological adaptation of foreign students from higher vocational colleges. With reference to the former survey result,a group counseling program was designed based on the Stress Coping Theory, and 24 foreign students with mild or moderate psychological maladjustment were selected from Research One.The 24 foreign students were divided into intervention group(12 students)and control group(12 students)randomly. The pre-test and post-test experimental design was adopted. The intervention group was conducted once a week for 120 minutes each time, with a total of 9 times of group counselling while the control group did not do any treatment. The data from Study 1 was used in the pre-test,and the post-test date was collected by using the "Zung's Depression Self-Rating Scale" and "Cross-Cultural Adaptation Stress Scale" after the end of the group. It is supplemented with qualitative materials such as the "Group Unit Activity Process Record Sheet" and "Group Activity Evaluation Sheet" as supplementary explanations of the intervention effect,in order to explore the effect of group counseling on reducing the pressure of cross-cultural adaptation and improving the level of psychological adaptation of foreign students in China. The research conclusions are listed as follows:(1)The overall mean value of the Psychological Adaptation Scale for International Students from Higher Vocational Colleges to China is 51.86,and the detection rate of psychological maladaptation is 50%.The overall psychological adaptation status did not reach adverse symptoms standards.(2)There are significant differences in psychological adaptation of foreign students from higher vocational colleges in terms of gender and grader. The disparities were manifested in the level of psychological adaptation of girls compared to boys, and the significantly lower level of psychological adaptation for juniors to sophomores. However, there are no significant differences in dimensions such as age, country, and number of friends.(3)foreign students from higher vocational colleges who have symptoms of psychological maladaptation suffer greater pressure on cross-cultural adaptation, which exceed the moderate pressure level. The state of psychological maladjustment is significantly positively correlated with the pressure of cross-cultural adaptation: the pressure of cross-cultural adaptation significantly predicts the state of psychological maladaptation.(4)The psychological adaptation group counseling activities for foreign college students in China can improve their psychological adaptation level obviously. The psychological adaptation group counseling program for foreign college students in designed by this research based on the theory of stress coping is practical and feasible, and may help group members effectively reduce the pressure of cross-cultural adaptation, thereby improving their psychological maladjustment.
