In this paper, fuyao(or violation of traditional dress code)in the Ming Dynasty is taken as the subject matter. The etymology of fuyao was first analyzed to shed light on the connotation of the word. With detailed investigation into the history of dress code violations in the Ming Dynasty, fuyao at that time can be divided into four categories:retro dressing, extravagant trespassing(or wearing clothes not in line with the social class),mixed dressing between men and women and custom taboos. This paper explores the reasons for the prevalence of fuyao from typical regions and groups under the social background of the Ming Dynasty. Then, the author summarizes the contemporary influence of fuyao in the Ming Dynasty and its enlightenment to modern clothing. The paper finally concludes social change is the fundamental reason for the emergence of fuyao in the Ming Dynasty, and that the prevalence of fuyao in the late Ming Dynasty was boosted by key areas and groups. At the expense of the rigid ritual system, fuyao promoted the costume economy in the Ming Dynasty. The costumes of the fuyao have unique Ming Dynasty characteristics and aesthetic values, which provide invaluable inspirations to the modern designers.
