| Alkyd resins are one of the most widely used coating resins in the world because they are low-cost bio-based materials.The development of water-borne alkyd resins has become increasingly important as environmental regulations have become more stringent.However,the water-borne alkyd resin film has the drawbacks of slow drying time and poor water resistance,making it unsuitable for today’s market.Acrylic modified water-borne alkyd resin containing various amounts of maleic anhydride was successfully prepared using the esterification method to deal with the problems of slow drying speed and poor water resistance of water-borne alkyd resin,as well as the advantages of fast drying and excellent water resistance of acrylic resin.Using benzyl methacrylate(BNMA)with a large sterically hindered functional group to participate in the copolymerization,an acrylic modified water-borne alkyd resin dispersion with moderate viscosity and excellent water resistance was created.The findings of the study suggest that:(1)The water absorption of the acrylic modified water-borne alkyd resin film was lowest when MA=4.0 wt% in the acrylic prepolymer,at only 11.90 %.Furthermore,when the above-mentioned acrylic acid modified water-borne alkyd resin with the dose of maleic anhydride is used to prepare the self-drying coating,The dry to touch time of the film was 1 h,the hard drying time was 8 h,and the gloss of the film at 60° can reach 88.9 %.The pencil hardness of the film may reach HB after14 days of self-drying,the flexibility is 1 mm,the adhesion is grade 1,and the water resistance is the best,reaching 32 days.The water resistance test of the RESYDROL? AY 6150w/45 WA film lasts only 14 days when compared to the same type of acrylic modified water-borne alkyd resin dispersion RESYDROL? AY6150w/45WA(reference resin).As a result,the introduction of maleic anhydride aids partial polycondensation of the acrylic prepolymer and the base alkyd resin,enhancing the alkyd resin’s water resistance to the greatest extent possible.(2)In order to reduce the viscosity of acrylic modified water-borne alkyd resin dispersion,three kinds of viscosity lowering monomers were synthesized by neocapric acid vinyl ester(VV-10),benzyl methacrylate(BNMA)and cyclohexyl methacrylate(CHMA).To make acrylic modified water-borne alkyd resin dispersions containing three different viscosity lowering monomers,the amount of maleic anhydride was designated at 4.0 wt% and the amount of viscosity lowering monomer was set at 5.0 wt%.The dry to touch time of the film was reduced to 20 min and the hard drying time was reduced to 3.5 h when the self-drying coating was made with acrylic modified water-borne alkyd resin and a benzyl methacrylate dosage of 5.0wt%.The film’s 60° gloss can reach 86.3 %.The pencil hardness of the paint film can reach HB after 14 days of self-drying,the flexibility is 1 mm,the adhesion is grade 1,and the water resistance test reaches 34 days until foaming.As a result,using BNMA will not only enhance the drying speed of the acrylic modified water-borne alkyd resin film,but will also improve its water resistance.As a conclusion,an acrylic modified water-borne alkyd resin with quick drying,outstanding water resistance,and moderate viscosity was effectively synthesized in this paper. |
