With the transformation of the main social contradictions and the deepening of China’s understanding and exploration of modernization, the people’s need for ecology is growing and the relationship between man and nature is heading towards becoming a prominent issue in modernization. From the 1930 s to the 1960 s,the "Eight Public Disasters" broke out in Western countries in the process of accelerated industrialization, which caused China to reflect on the way of modern development.Since the reform and opening up,the environmental problems that emerged in stages during the modernization process of developed countries in the last hundred years have been concentrated in the rapid development of China for more than 40 years. The crude economic growth model has brought about serious ecological problems such as ecosystem imbalance, sharp reduction of wetland areas, haze and black smelly water bodies, which have impacted on people’s lives as well as sustainable social economic development. The Party and the State attach particular importance to alleviating the conflicts in the relationship between man and nature. In the report of the 19 th Party Congress,Xi Jinping, taking into account the current situation of China, for the first time explicitly put forward the important statement of"modernization in harmony with nature" from the perspective of ecological civilization, and further pointed out in the Fifth Plenary Session of the 19 th Central Committee:"Promote green development, promote the harmonious coexistence of man and nature, build an ecological civilization system, promote the overall green transformation of economic and social development, and build a modernization in harmony with nature. It is based on the real problem of tightening ecological pressure in China and the reflection on the shortcomings of Western modernization. This important thesis inherits and develops the Marxist ideas of modernization and ecology as well as traditional Chinese ecological ideas. In terms of historical development, the continuous exploration of modernization by the Chinese Communists and Xi Jinping’s experience in governance practices during his local service provide the practical basis for it.In terms of its main content, its scientific connotation is elaborated around five parts: basic principles, audience groups, intrinsic requirements, reliance methods, and value goals. This thesis proposed by Xi Jinping possesses the important characteristic of four unities. In addition,China has the unique advantages to achieve this modernization, namely, the advantages of the leadership of the CPC,the advantages of the socialist system, the advantages of the traditional and harmonious culture, and the advantages of the post-modernization.The modernization of the harmonious coexistence of man and nature runs through all fields. On the economic front, promote green and low-carbon development.Politically, improve the system of ecological civilization.Culturally, vigorously promote green civilization.Socially, carry out green actions for all people. In terms of international cooperation, actively participate in global ecological and environmental governance. In terms of theoretical significance, this thesis enriches and develops Xi Jinpin g’s thought on ecological civilization, realizes the innovation of modern development theory, and elevates the new realm of modernization of sustainable development.I n terms of practical significance,it has solved the difficult problem of China’s econ omic development, realized the reversal and transcendence of traditional Western mo dernization, and provided a reference for the modernization construction of the majo rity of developing countries.
