The rapid development of economy and the continuous progress of science and technology not only promote the development of society, but also cause some adverse effects on the ecological environment.Ecological problems have gradually become a hot topic of concern. Some Western environmentalists argue that Marxism is "ecologically fractured" and that it does not explicitly address the causes and solutions of ecological problems.Facing the contemporary ecological crisis and environmentalists to the challenge of Marxism, ecology Marxism,Jonathan Hughes systematically probes into the ecological thoughts of Marxism, attacked the Marxism can’t solve the problem of environment error paradox, illustrates the ecological value of Marxism,And constructed its very characteristic ecological Marxism ideological system.Based on Hughes, the study of the journal ecology and historical materialism, this paper tries to analyze the Hughes ecology Marxism social background and theoretical origin, emphatically from Hughes to the understanding of the two-way interactive relationship between human and nature, the defense of Marx’s theory of "development of the productive forces",ecological defense on the Marx’s theory of need these three aspects,The main contents of Hughes’ ecological Marxist thought are thoroughly explained.Taking the two-way interaction between man and nature as the starting point,Hughes emphasized the understanding of ecological problems and natural limitations from the relationship dimension of nature, society and technology,so as to provide methodological support for promoting the ecological benign development of productive forces, which to some extent satisfies the real needs of human beings.Hughes’ ecological Marxism thought has its theoretical value and practical significance. It responds to the criticism and censure of Marxism by environmentalists, enriches the ecological meaning of Marxism and inspires us to consider how to deal with the global ecological crisis and promote the construction of ecological civilization in China. However, there are also some deficiencies in Hughes’ ecological Marxism, which are mainly manifested in his lack of indepth criticism of the capitalist system and his over interpretation of Marx and Engels’ texts. Therefore,we need to further study and understand Hughes’ ecological Marxism from a dialectical perspective.
