Building a high-quality opening pattern and realizing healthy and orderly urbanization are both important tasks for China in the new stage of development. In the actual promotion process, opening to the outside world will gradually improve the environment with the improvement of technical level. However, urbanization may cause negative environmental problems due to unregulated development. In addition, opening to the outside world can also affect the development of urban sprawl and environmental pollution by promoting new development zones, etc.,and urban sprawl will in turn have an impact on opening to the outside world and environmental pollution. There is an interrelated relationship between opening to the outside world, urban sprawl and environmental pollution. This paper takes 254 cities as the research object, and uses the data from 2011 to2018 to establish a time-fixed spatial Durbin model to empirically analyze the impact of opening to the outside world and urban sprawl on environmental pollution. And each region is divided into eastern, central and western three parts according to the economic zone, and the sub-sample analysis is carried out.The study found that the country’s degree of opening to the outside world, the degree of urban sprawl and the degree of environmental pollution all have agglomeration characteristics and spatial spillover effects;opening to the outside world can significantly improve environmental conditions, but the impact of urban sprawl is opposite;at the same time, trade opening can improve the environment caused by urban sprawl.Pollution, while openness to investment has the opposite effect. In addition, there are obvious differences in these impacts in different regions. The performance of urban sprawl in the eastern and western regions is consistent with the overall impact, while it can effectively alleviate environmental pollution in the central region. The effect is more significant;both the investment adjustment effect and the trade adjustment effect are significant in the east, while only the trade adjustment effect is significant in the west. Finally, according to the research conclusions of this paper, relevant policy recommendations are put forward. This study supplements the relevant theories from a new perspective, and incorporates spatial factors into the econometric model on the basis of the relevant research to better explain the objective reality. This not only helps the local government to solve environmental problems and find a balance between economic development and environmental pollution control, but also helps local governments to recognize the interaction mechanism between opening up and urban sprawl, and promotes the country’s green and high-quality economic development roads offer some new ideas.
