In recent years, the problem of domestic sewage discharge in rural areas is becoming more and more serious. The disorderly discharge of domestic sewage has gradually become a key factor restricting the green and sustainable development of rural areas. In the long run,the deteriorating problem of domestic sewage discharge in rural areas will directly hinder the improvement of the sewage treatment’s effectiveness, which is not conducive to the construction of ecological environment and the safety of drinking water. The household sewage discharge behavior can directly affect the water environment, centralized and orderly sewage discharge behavior is of great significance to promote the effectiveness of sewage treatment and improve the quality of water environment. Therefore, guiding and standardizing the sewage discharge behavior of farmers as an important measure of source treatment can give full play to the dominant position of farmers in environmental treatment, solve the problem of rural domestic sewage from the root, and improve the level of subsequent sewage treatment. However, from the current situation of sewage discharge in Jiangsu Province,to a certain extent farmers’ random discharge behavior still restrains the improvement of the overall treatment level. With the transfer of a large number of rural labor to non-agricultural industries, there are some differences in the choice of sewage discharge behavior among different rural households. Therefore, based on the relevant theories and the general situation of the sample areas in Jiangsu Province, this paper studies the domestic sewage discharge behavior of farmers from the perspective of non-agricultural employment. The existing literature has carried out a large number of studies on the impact of nonagricultural employment on sewage discharge behavior, mainly including the direct impact of non-agricultural employment itself on sewage discharge behavior. However, previous studies have ignored the differences of sewage discharge subjects in the context of non-farm employment and the indirect impact of capital endowment. Therefore, this paper combs the current situation of rural domestic sewage treatment in Jiangsu Province and related treatment policies,to understand the effectiveness of rural sewage treatment and the problems existing in reality.Through literature review and theoretical basis, this paper constructs a theoretical analysis framework of the influence of farmers’ non-agricultural employment and capital endowment on farmers’ domestic sewage discharge behavior.Based on the micro-survey data of2330 households in 13 cities of Jiangsu Province, this paper divides non-agricultural employment into urban non-agricultural employment and rural non-agricultural employment according to different sewage discharge subjects, which includes capital endowment as an intermediary variable and uses Oprobit model and CMP method. This paper empirically examines the impact of farmers’ non-agricultural employment, capital endowment and other control variables on household domestic sewage discharge behavior, and empirically explores the internal influence mechanism of urban non-agricultural employment and rural nonagricultural employment,in order to provide policy suggestions for promoting domestic sewage treatment and improving rural living environment. The results show that:(1)The popularization rate of sewage treatment equipment in rural areas of Jiangsu Province is relatively high, but the problem of random sewage discharge in the province is still prominent, and the proportion of farmers who adopt the behavior of domestic sewage treatment is only 44%.It shows that the current sewage discharge behavior of some farmers is still hindering the subsequent sewage collection and treatment, resulting in rural water environment pollution. In sub-regions,the level of sewage treatment in southern and central Jiangsu is higher than that in northern Jiangsu.(2)Farmers’ non-agricultural employment significantly promotes the adoption of farmers’ sewage discharge behavior, among which the inhibitory effect on the random sewage discharge is more obvious. When the proportion of non-agricultural employment in rural households increases by 1%,the probability that farmers orderly choose to discharge domestic sewage into the sewers is 3.4%.(3)For non-agricultural employment farmers in different spatial ranges, environmental awareness has relatively significantly promoted the sewage discharge behavior of urban nonagricultural employment farmers.Social network plays a significant role in promoting the adoption of sewage discharge behavior of rural non-agricultural employment farmers.Various dimensions of capital endowment play a significant intermediary role in the impact of nonagricultural employment on farmers’ sewage discharge behavior, which confirms the importance of capital endowment in guiding and standardizing the sewage discharge behavior of non-agricultural employment farmers. Therefore,in order to effectively solve the problem of domestic sewage discharge in rural areas,it is necessary to actively guide the sewage discharge behavior of non-agricultural employment households, strengthen the interaction of social networks in the village, and strengthen the publicity of sewage knowledge. In addition, through carrying out village collective activities, providing sewage treatment education and training, strengthening village infrastructure construction, and broadening farmers’ sources of income, guide and standardize farmers’ sewage discharge behavior.
