With the economical globalization,China has become more closely connected with the world.Apart from economical exchanges, cultural exchanges have also become one of the important exchanges between countries.Universities in China are constantly promoting the opening up of higher education to the outside world. As the scale of international students coming to China continues to expand, the issue of cross-cultural adaptation of international students is gradually gaining more attention. In recent years, medicine has become the most popular choice of international students coming to study in China, and medical education in China has attracted much attention.International students who leave their hometown and come to an unfamiliar environment will encounter many difficulties and challenges, and the medical profession is quite special.Medicine is an extremely complex profession. It includes not only medical science, but also medical humanities.Chinese medical students take a lot of time and energy to study this major. For international medical students, they need to meet the learning requirements while adapting to the new environment. Therefore, this group of medical students is also more involved in cross-cultural adaptation issues. There are few studies on the cross-cultural adaptation of medical students in China. This study focuses on how international medical students in China can adapt to the local culture and life better, and understand the current situation of medical students’ cross-cultural adaptation. This study investigates the academic adaptation status, daily life adaptation status, personal physical and mental adaptation status of international medical students,as well as the motivation and satisfaction of international medical students. The factors that affect the cross-cultural adaptation of medical students are explored, and corresponding management suggestions are put forward. This study investigated the cross-cultural adaptation of medical students by means of questionnaires and interviews.A total of 363 valid questionnaires were collected, and 23 international medical students were interviewed in depth. The results of the study revealed that:(1)In terms of academic adaptation, the most prominent problems are difficulty in communicating with Chinese medical teachers, heavy academic burden, and unable to adapt to the teaching methods of Chinese teachers.(2)In terms of adapting to daily life, international medical students have low Chinese proficiency, and it is difficult for them to communicate smoothly with locals; They also have difficulty in adapting to the local climate and diet; They do not adapt to the school’s management and rules.(3)In terms of personal physical and mental adaptation, medical students coming to China, the unfamiliar environment and heavy medical learning tasks have some impact on their physical and mental state;they often feel lonely and miss their relatives and friends in their hometown. The study results show that the overall situation of international medical students’ cross-cultural adaptation is acceptable.Based on the findings of the study,we propose some recommendations for the management of international medical students in Chinese universities, including: strengthening the ability of teaching staff for international students, focusing on Chinese language and Chinese culture courses, organizing more extra-curricular activities to enhance the communication between international students and Chinese students, and improving the quality of education.
