The Sheng ji Zong lu is a comprehensive medical book collected, organized, and published by the government during the reign of Emperor Huizong of the Northern Song Dynasty(1111-1125),which included previous medical books and folk prescriptions. This book contains many prescriptions for external use, especially the prescriptions for external use of decoction with special treatment methods. Therefore, this thesis analyzes the 355 prescriptions for external use of decoction included in the Sheng Ji Zong Lu,mainly including the following six parts:The first part is the textual research on the source of the prescriptions cited in the Sheng Ji Zong Lu.Through the analysis and research of the prescription for the use of the decoction outside the decoction included in the Sheng Ji Zong Lu,the statistics and inheritance of the medical experience of the previous generation, the tracing of the source of the prescription, the analysis of the scope of the prescription included,According to statistics, most of the included prescriptions come from medical books such as Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang,Xiao Pin Fang,Bei Ji Qian Jin Yao Fang,Wai Tai Mi Yao Fang,Tai Ping Sheng Hui Fang, etc, the study of the traditional Chinese medicine of the Northern Song Dynasty, and the formulation of the new prescription. The second part analyzes the composition characteristics of the decoction for external use.Including the characteristics of single drug formulation, such as large dose, fuzzy dose, informal dose form. The characteristics of the prescription of multiple drugs include both the characteristics of the eight-course syndrome differentiation and the unique characteristics of the decoction for external use, such as the combination of drugs with the same drug properties, the combination of toxic drugs with more than the conventional dose, and the use of multiple kinds of external drug guidance. The external drug guidance can not only enhance the clinical efficacy, reduce toxicity, and adhesion delay, but also improve the drug guidance rules of the decoction for external use,and provide choices for future doctors. Finally, the quantity and composition characteristics of the decoction for external use were analyzed. The third part is to analyze the use method of the decoction for external use. This part covers the preparation methods of drugs, including the decoction method for conventional drugs, the salivation method for mucus-rich drugs, the mashing method for fresh and juicy drugs, and the ash extraction method for drugs that are inconvenient for direct use,to explore the differences in the applied forms in different diseases. There are also ways to use drugs, such as drenching, soaking, pad staining and drip irrigation. As well as the indication of discontinuation during drug use, according to the frequency of use,the specific effect, and the temperature of the drug juice. The fourth part is about the main symptoms and signs of decoction for external use.In addition to treating common surgical diseases, the external use of decoction can also treat gynecological diseases, paediatric diseases and internal diseases, especially the treatment of facial diseases. The fifth part is about the application characteristics of decoction for external use.The external use of decoction can alleviate the toxicity of internal medication, reduce the burden on the spleen and stomach, and improve the acceptance of the body deficiency population,It is especially suitable for the patients with poor spleen and stomach function, newborns, old and weak.In clinical application,it can not only be used with internal medication to enhance the efficacy, but also can be used alone to treat some special diseases and syndromes. The sixth part is about the role of Sheng ji Zong lu as a link between the past and the future. The Sheng Ji Zong Lu not only contains a large number of empirical prescriptions for external use of decoction from previous generations, but also cuts out many new prescriptions on the basis of inheritance, which are cited by many medical books of later generations, and makes contributions to the expansion of the treatment scope of diseases.More importantly, the emerging ideas for the formulation of external prescriptions provide a theoretical basis different from that of internal medicine for later generations. In the development of foreign users, the "Sheng Ji Zong Lu" has an important bearing role.
