| OBJECTIVEThis study conducted a questionnaire survey on nurses to understand the current situation of nurses’ medical narrative competence, empathy ability, and care ability, and to explored the correlation between the three. To explore the mediating effect of empathy ability between medical narrative competence and care ability in nurses.through structural equation modeling. To provide a theoretical basis and guiding significance for the cultivation of medical narrative ability and care ability.METHODSFrom October to December 2021,convenience sampling was used to select 580 nurses from 3 hospitals in Guangzhou City as the research object.to carry out a cross-sectional survey. The General Information Questionnaire,Narrative Competence Scale, the Jefferson Scale of Empathy-Health Professionals, and Caring Ability Inventory were used to evaluate nurses.SPSS20.0 and AMOS23.0 were used to analyze the survey date, the statistical methods used include descriptive statistical analysis,chi-square test, pearson correlation analysis, multiple linear regression analysis, the bootstrap method to test the mediation effect.RESULTSThe total score of nurses’ medical narrative ability scale was(149.03±20.27),and there were statistically significant differences in age, department, working years, education, professional title, nature of employment, degree of caring for colleagues, job satisfaction, and marital status(P<0.05).The total score of the Jefferson Scale for nurses was(115.19±13.58),and there were statistically significant differences in age, working years, professional title, nature of employment, degree of caring for colleagues, job satisfaction, and marital status(P<0.05).The total score of nurses’caring ability scale was(193.71 ± 17.43),and there were statistically significant differences in age, working years, professional title, nature of employment, degree of caring for colleagues, job satisfaction, and marital status(P<0.05).In this study, the total score of nurses’ medical narrative ability was positively correlated with the total score of empathy ability(r=0.487,P<0.01),and the total score of medical narrative ability was positively correlated with the total score of care ability(r=0.566,P<0.01).The total score of ability was positively correlated with the total score of care ability(r=0.699,P<0.01).The results of multiple linear regression analysis showed that professional title, degree of caring for colleagues, medical narrative ability, and empathy ability had a positive predictive effect on nurses’ caring ability(R2=0.600,adjusted R2=0.592,F=68.607,P<0.05),explaining 59.2%of the total variance.Hierarchical stepwise regression analysis was used to test the moderating effect. The product of medical narrative ability and empathy ability had no significant predictive effect on care ability(R2=0.602,adjusted R2=0.591,F=2.386,P=0.123>0.05),the mediating effect of nurses’ empathy ability on the relationship between medical narrative ability and care ability was not significant. The results of the structural equation model showed that the impact of medical narrative ability on caring ability was a direct effect:the path coefficient was 0.289.The influence of empathy ability on caring ability includes direct effect:the path coefficient is 0.647;and indirect effect:the mediation value of the path coefficient is 0.315,and the confidence interval is(0.295~0.376).The total effect size was 0.604.The mediating effect accounted for 52.15%of the total effect.CONCLUSIONThe scores of nurses’ medical narrative ability, empathy, and caring ability were all in a level above the middle level.Empathy plays a partial mediating role between nurses’ medical narrative ability and care ability.Nursing managers should pay attention to the training of nurses’ medical narrative ability and empathy ability, and take corresponding measures to improve nurses’ humanistic quality, and create a cultural environment for humanistic nursing. |
