In recent years, the cancer burden in China has continued to rise, seriously affecting people’s health status. If we can pay attention to patients’ needs in a timely manner,we can provide them with a humanistic way of coping with the burden of cancer. This thesis aims to analyze the essence of humanistic psychologist Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory, expand the connotation and extension of its basic concepts, and then analyze the intrinsic relevance and ethical implications of the diversified needs of mid-to late-stage cancer patients, and propose a humanistic medical practice approach to meet the diversified needs of mid-to late-stage cancer patients.Maslow identified the types of needs prevalent in healthy people and constructed the famous hierarchy of needs theory. This study further explores the diversified needs of mid-to late-stage cancer patients based on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory.Although mid-to late-stage cancer patients have the same physical, safety, belonging and love,self-esteem and self-actualization needs as healthy people, there are special characteristics in terms of specific expressions and interrelationships. In cancer treatment, the goals of prolonged survival, functional preservation, and improved quality of life are often difficult to be respected and met simultaneously. For this reason, this paper uses literature analysis, conceptual analysis and logical reasoning, and case study methods to try to identify and meet the problem of diversified medical care needs of mid-to late-stage cancer patients, the problem of prioritization of diversified needs of mid-to late-stage cancer patients, the problem of applicability of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory in the group of mid-to late-stage cancer patients, and the problem of humanistic medical practice in meeting diversified needs of mid-to late-stage cancer patients.Based on the analysis of the relative superiority of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory from low to high, this paper argues that the order of satisfying needs at each level is not fixed for patients with intermediate and advanced cancer, and that needs at different levels can be satisfied simultaneously. This paper identifies the dilemmas and preferences in the process of diversified needs satisfaction, taking the fertility needs of cancer patients and the multiple needs of participating in clinical trials as examples. The paper argues that meeting the diverse needs of patients with mid-to late-stage cancer follows basic ethical principles, and suggests that practicing the concept of"patient-centeredness" is meeting the diverse needs of patients with mid-to late-stage cancer. In terms of humanistic medicine practice, this paper advocates that the fulfillment of the diversified needs of patients with mid-to late-stage cancer cannot be achieved without the joint efforts of both doctors and patients. On the one hand, medical institutions and medical personnel should establish the concept of humanistic medicine and carry out humanistic medicine practice in a timely manner;this paper analyzes the meaning of positive thinking therapy, music therapy, and palliative care and the specific manifestations of meeting the physiological needs, safety needs, caring needs, and self-esteem needs of mid-to late-stage cancer patients. On the other hand, patients with mid-to late-stage cancer should actively seek social support to meet their needs for physiology and safety, love and sense of belonging;those who have the conditions should raise their awareness of participation, actively participate in clinical joint decision-making,make clinical decisions in their own best interests, and meet their diversified needs.
