From 1910 to 1911,a pestis occurred in several provinces of Northeast China. The pestis broke out in the northeast of China, spread rapidly from abroad to China along the railway, and then to other cities in the mainland. It was the first pestis epidemic, and also the first large-scale Pulmonary pestis disaster in northern China in modern times.Based on the methods including literature research, field investigation, comparative research and multidisciplinary combination mainly, the research is conducted in the paper.By mining and analyzing the relevant records and descriptions of pestis in the original local chronicles and archives of Northeast China in the late Qing Dynasty, the impact of the pestis on the social environment and people’s thinking and customs at that time is discussed.Through the actual visit to the transit area of the epidemic disaster and the relevant relics and the memorial hall established to commemorate the fight against the epidemic, the first-hand original material materials and relevant documents are obtained, with a view to exploring the index and outlining the facts.By using the methods of epidemiology and disease archaeology, the real source of the plague is demonstrated, concerning the specific figures of the number of deaths and detailed spatial distribution in the areas affected by the plague in the three eastern provinces, and moreover all figures are meant to fit with the map.The dissertation consists of more than 60000 words and five chapters.Chapter 1 is the introduction.Firstly,by reviewing the relevant research status in the academic community, the significance of the study is expounded.Secondly,it introduces the significance of the topic and research methods, and then clear up the basic ideas of the dissertation. Finally, the innovation and shortcomings is explained briefly. The general situation of pestis in Northeast China from 1910 to1911 is discussed concisely in the second chapter.First of all,a typical case,Dr.Xu Shiming, showed that the epidemic was fierce and infectious;Secondly,a brief overview and analysis of the disaster is provided, the plague introduced from the perspective of general epidemiology and the specific number and spatial distribution of the affected areas and the number of deaths investigated. Finally, the social impact of the pestis is assessed briefly in two aspects, the blow on various industries and the influences on economy and politics. And the response of the central government and local health administrative agencies to the plague is investigated. In the third and fourth chapters, the International Pestis Conference is discussed in details. The third chapter starts with the general situation of the conference, the participants, the agenda and rules of procedure of the conference, the papers submitted by the participants to the conference, the provisional conclusions formed by the conference, the positive significance and shortcomings of the conference, etc. The fourth chapter is the discussion content of the meeting, which is divided into five categories according to the five major themes and subcategories in the original materials. The rich contents and far-reaching impact of the international medical conference is elaborated through in-depth excavation and analysis of first-hand materials as well as the study of speech contents and experimental records. The fifth chapter is the conclusion part, which clarifies the duality of epidemic disaster as a crisis, and explains the enlightenment of yesterday’s epidemic disaster to today’s current situations. The research highlights three innovations.Firstly, fully excavate the original materials on the premise that they are available, and compare different language versions of the same original document or different versions of the same language to determine the specific contents.Secondly, from the perspective of science and medicine, which few people paid attention to before, the contents of speeches and experimental records of participants in the universal pestis conference are analyzed in order to examine the errors and reveal the real contents of speeches.Thirdly,by virtue of the methods of epidemiology and disease archaeology, the real source of the plague is demonstrated, concerning the specific figures of the number of deaths and detailed spatial distribution in the areas affected by the plague in the three eastern provinces.
