Humility In Clinical Psychological Supervision In A Chinese Cultural Context Structure And Measurement

This study explored the definition and structure of supervisory humility through qualitative as well as quantitative research,developed a localized supervisory humility questionnaire,and examined the overall characteristics of supervisory humility and the differences in key demographic variables.In study 1,by means of the paired research method and interview method,one-on-one interviews were conducted with five supervisors who were engaged in individual psychological supervision and five counselors who had received individual clinical psychological supervision,and the interview data were coded and analyzed through generic analysis.The results revealed that the definition and structure of supervisory humility contained three dimensions: cognitive,attitudinal,and behavioral.In study 2,on the basis of the interview results,literature analysis,and relevant scales,the supervisory humility questionnaire was developed and its reliability and validity were verified.The results showed that the internal consistency reliability,split-half reliability,retest reliability,content validity,structural validity,and criterion validity of the questionnaire were good;the overall level of supervisory humility was found to be significantly higher than the theoretical median through descriptive statistics,and the difference test revealed that the supervisor behavior dimension differed in terms of the gender of the subjects;the supervisor attitude dimension and the supervisor behavior dimension differed in terms of the age of the supervisors.The following conclusions were drawn from this study.(1)The qualitative study found that the structure of supervisory humility contains cognitive,attitudinal,and behavioral dimensions of both the supervisor and the supervisee.(2)The self-compiled Supervisory Humility Questionnaire consists of 13 items and contains three dimensions: supervisor attitude(5 items),supervisor behavior(4 items),and supervisee attitude and behavior(4 items).The reliability and validity of the Supervisory Humility Questionnaire are good and the questionnaire can be used as a valid assessment tool for supervisory practice.(3)The overall level of supervisory humility was high,and the level of supervisor’s humble behavior felt by female supervisees in supervision was significantly higher than that felt by male supervisees;supervisors over 60 years of age had significantly higher levels of humility in the supervisory attitude dimension as well as in the supervisory behavior dimension than supervisors in the age group of 30-59 years of age.
