Object: To retrospectively analyze the clinical characteristics of pediatric inpatient deaths in a hospital during the 10-year period from 2012 to 2021 to provide a reference for reducing child mortality and further eliminating preventable deaths in children. Methods: A retrospective analysis was used to collect case data of 35572 children aged 0-14 years who were hospitalized in the pediatric department of a hospital from 2012 to 2021 and 97 children who died during the same period, including age, sex, ethnicity, days of hospitalization, season, and disease of death, and to statistically analyze the morbidity and mortality rates and the main causes of death.Statistical software SPSS25.0 was used to statistically analyze the collected data.Results:(1)The overall case fatality rate from 2012 to 2021 was 0.27%,and comparing the case fatality rate from 2012 to 2016 and 2017 to 2021,the case fatality rate decreased in the latter 5 years compared with the first 5 years, and the difference was statistically significant(P < 0.05);(2)The composition of death was higher in boys than in girls;the difference was not statistically significant when comparing the case fatality rate of boys and girls(P > 0.05);(3)The neonatal group accounted for the highest composition of deaths(38.0%),and the rest were in the infant group(23.7%),1-5 years old group(19.6%),and 5-14 years old group(18.6%)in that order;(4)Comparing the distribution of hospitalization time from 2012 to 2016 and 2017 to2021,the difference was not statistically significant(P > 0.05);the highest composition ratio of deaths within24 hours of admission(45.36%);(5)The top 5 causes of death are: neonatal diseases(36.08%),respiratory diseases(12.37%),cardiovascular system diseases(12.37%),hematological system diseases(10.31%),and accidental injuries(9.28%);comparing the changes in the composition of causes of death from 2012 to 2016 and from 2017 to 2021,neonatal diseases are in the first place, hematological system diseases from second to the seventh rank, and accidental injury from the seventh to the third rank;(6)Comparing the composition of infectious,non-infectious,and diagnosed unspecified diseases from 2012 to 2016 and 2017 to 2021,the differences were not statistically significant(P > 0.05);(7)The top three diseases with the highest mortality rate are: hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and liver-occupying lesions;(8)The cause of death varies by age group, the first cause of death in early neonates is neonatal respiratory distress syndrome, late neonates is neonatal sepsis, the infant group’s first cause of death is severe pneumonia, the 1~5 years old group is tied for first in severe encephalitis and accidental injury, and the 5~14 year old group’s first cause of death is acute leukemia;(9)In the neonatal death group compared with the control group, prematurity, history of asphyxia, twin births and rural origin of residence were higher in the death group than in the control group, with statistically significant differences(P < 0.05);multifactorial Logistic analysis of prematurity was an independent risk factor for neonatal death(P < 0.05).Conclusions:(1)The top 5 causes of death during the 10-year period were: neonatal system diseases, respiratory system diseases, cardiovascular system diseases, hematological system diseases, and accidental injuries;(2)The cause of death varies by age group, the first cause of death in early neonates is neonatal respiratory distress syndrome, late neonates is neonatal sepsis, the infant group’s first cause of death is severe pneumonia, the 1~5 years old group is tied for first in severe encephalitis and accidental injury, and the 5~14year old group’s first cause of death is acute leukemia;(3)The neonatal group had the highest composition ratio of deaths;prematurity was an independent risk factor for neonatal deaths.
