ObjectivesThis study investigated the effect of Yijinjing combined with elastic band exercise on body composition,physical fitness,glycolipid metabolism,and hormonal readiness in populations with prediabetes.The objective was to seek a suitable,safe,and effective exercise way for the elderly,which was helpful to delay muscle atrophy and the decline of muscle function.This study would provide the practice basis and theoretical basis for the prevention and treatment of diabetes.MethodsFrom December 2020 to April 2021,members of the research group,together with medical staff of Shanghai East Hospital,recruited prediabetic populations from each street in Yangpu District of Shanghai Municipality,according to the inclusion criteria,exclusion criteria,and exercise risk screening questionnaire.The diagnostic criteria were referred to Diagnosis and Classification of Diabetes Mellitus Provisional Report of a WHO Consultation(1999)and China Guidelines for the Prevention and Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes(2020).The participants were randomly assigned to the control group(n=21)and the exercise group(n=26)in a 1:1 ratio by generating random numbers using SPSS software.The control group maintained the original living and eating habits without the use of drugs and exercise intervention.The exercise group received Yijinjing combined with elastic band exercise five times per week for six months.All the outcome measures were assessed immediately at baseline,after three-month and six-month intervention.Results1.Basic characteristicsNo significant group differences in baseline characteristics were found(all P>0.05).There was good comparability between groups.2.Body compositionAfter six months of Yijinjing combined with elastic band exercise,the body weight,body mass index,leg fat mass,gynoid fat mass,and total body fat mass in exercise group were significantly decreased compared with those at baseline(P<0.05).Compared with those at baseline,total lean mass decreased at three and six months in both groups.The total muscle mass loss in the exercise group was less than that in the control group at all time periods.Although there was no significant change in body fat percentage in the exercise group,it showed a gradual downward trend.3.Physical fitnessCompared with those at baseline,handgrip strength,gait speed,reaction time,leg power,eyes-closed and single-legged standing,and sit-and-reach were significantly improved for the exercise group at three and six months(P<0.05).Compared with those at three months,handgrip strength,reaction time,leg power,and sit-and-reach at six months were significantly different for the exercise group(P<0.05).Gait speed and reaction time between both groups at three and six months were significantly different(P<0.05),and leg power at six months(P<0.05).Compared with baseline,the reaction time of the control group at six months was significantly improved(P<0.05),and no other significant changes were observed.4.Glycolipid metabolism and hormone levelsCompared with those at baseline,fasting plasma glucose,2-hour post-meal plasma glucose,fasting insulin,total cholesterol,and insulin resistance index in the exercise group gradually decreased,and growth hormone was gradually increased with significance at six months(P<0.05).Compared with those at baseline,25-hydroxyvitamin D gradually and significantly increased in both groups at three and six months(P<0.05).Also,compared with those at three months,25-hydroxyvitamin D in both groups at six months was significantly different(P<0.05).But the two groups’ testosterone levels didn’t significantly change.Conclusion1.Yijinjing combined with elastic band exercise can substantially reduce the body weight and body fat content of populations with prediabetes,improve muscle function and growth hormone secretion,and delay muscle mass reduction and diabetes development.2.Yijinjing combined with elastic band exercise prescription of this study(five times a week,one hour per time,for 6 months)is safe and easy for the middle-aged and elderly to learn.
