Objectives: At present, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in patients with schizophrenia is high, and the therapeutic effects for the negative symptoms and cognitive symptoms of schizophrenia have been unsatisfactory, which remains a challenge in clinical treatment.Studies have suggested that oxidative stress and immune inflammation are involved in the physiopathologic mechanism of schizophrenia and its metabolic syndrome. In addition to strong antioxidant and antiinflammatory activities, sulforaphane(SFN)also has the potential to improve the symptoms and metabolic components of schizophrenia. This study was designed to explore the efficacy of combined treatment with SFN for the negative symptoms, cognitive symptoms and metabolic components in patients with schizophrenia,as well as its effects on the levels of superoxide dismutase(SOD)and high-sensitivity Creactive protein(Hs CRP).Design: A total of 45 patients with schizophrenia that were predominantly associated with negative symptoms and in the stable stage were included in this study. In addition to the preexisting treatment, the enrolled patients were given SFN tablets at the dose of 90mg/day for a total of 24 weeks. The subjects were interviewed and assessed for the medical condition at baseline,12 weeks, and 24 weeks. The primary assessments included the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale(PANSS),the Brief Cognitive Assessment Tool for Schizophrenia(B-CATS),the Digital Span Test(DST),and body composition.Efficacy in each group was evaluated by PANSS score reduction rate, and the indicators including SOD,Hs CRP,and triglyceride(TG),etc.,were detected. Results: At 24 weeks of SFN treatment in the patients,PANSS negative subscale score,Trail Making Test B(TMT B),and TG had significantly decreased(P<0.05);SOD and Hs CRP had significantly increased(P<0.05);Hs CRP had improved significantly in patients with effective PANSS negative subscale score reduction rate(P<0.05).Conclusions: SFN may serve as a potential adjunctive intervention to safely improve the negative symptoms of schizophrenia. The anti-inflammatory effect of reducing Hs CRP might be the therapeutic mechanism for SFN to improve the negative symptoms of schizophrenia.SFN is also potentially effective for reducing TG and improving the working memory of patients with schizophrenia.
