| The report is conducted on the basis of "Shenzhen Lies at 22°27′-22°52′N",the representative work of Deng Yiguang’s urban writing,in which Deng uses numerous metaphors to reveal the emptiness of post-modern people’s mental world.Metaphor is pervasive in our daily life.In 1980,American linguists Lakoff and Johnson proposed the conceptual metaphor theory in the book The Metaphor We Live By(1980),which systematically expounds metaphor from the perspective of cognition and thinking, marking the beginning of the research on metaphor cognition. With the guidance of conceptual metaphor theory and the combination of Newmark’s and Toury’s metaphor translation strategies, the report investigates the applicability of translation strategies in translating literary metaphors with the examples of ontological metaphor, orientational metaphor, and structural metaphor. The report concludes that in dealing with ontological metaphors, retaining is mainly used because people have the tendency to consider abstract concepts as concrete entities in the conceptual mapping system in both Chinese and English. When translating structural metaphors,a strategy of retaining is primarily but not completely adopted. In some cases,a paraphrasing strategy will be used to maintain the original meaning due to the target domain’s discrepancy. In dealing with orientational metaphors, considering the difference in the target reader’s cultural background, converting and deleting strategies are used, that is,not retaining the metaphorical form. |
