| The period from 1945 to 1949 cannot be ignored in the study of the history of Sino-Indonesia relations. It is a critical period of social transformation and regime change in the two countries. In order to realize complete independence from Dutch,Indonesia after its establishment actively sought the support and recognition of international community.China, likewise an Asian country, has a similar experience of national liberation and serves as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, thus became Indonesia’s priority for contact. As the Indonesian-Dutch troubles escalated, two million local Overseas Chinese were involved in the dispute.Republic of China negotiated with Indonesia and Dutch on the issue of protecting Overseas Chinese respectively. The severe issue of Overseas Chinese and the weak bilateral relations have complicated the relations between China and Indonesia. From the perspective of fundamental demands,China requires the Indonesia to protect the interests of Overseas Chinese, and the Indonesia hopes that China will recognize the legitimacy of the Sukarno regime and firmly support the struggle for Indonesian independence. However,China strictly the neutral policy of the dispute between Indonesia and Dutch, and Indonesia was incapable of stabilizing the social order and avoiding tragedies of Overseas Chinese.During this period,Sino-Indonesia relations showed unilaterally short-term enthusiasm once in a while, however one’s diplomatic needs did not match up with the other’s corresponding countermeasures, and they were unable to meet each other’s core interests, therefore the relationship between the Republic of China and the Republic of Indonesia inevitably became cool down. After the defeat of the Nationalist party from the mainland, the Republic of the United States of Indonesia and the People’s Republic of China formally established diplomatic relations.Sino-Indonesia relations have entered a new historical stage. |
