This thesis aims to discuss translation strategies for reproducing sound rhetoric in children’s literature from the perspective of children’s cognition and phonological awareness development.On the one hand,according to informationprocessing models,children receive and represent information from enactive way to iconic way to symbolic way.And they are more sensitive to symbolic language when receiving information through hearing.On the other hand,children’s phonological awareness advances from recognizing syllable parts to onset-rime awareness to phoneme awareness.This means that words with regular rhyme change or repeated phonemes are easier for them to distinguish.In addition,children show their preference for prosody at the early stage of phonological awareness development.For Chinese children who need extra tone awareness,four-character Chinese expressions with harmonious change of tone are easier to remember.These features prove that sound symbolism,repetition,rhyme and rhythm are salient information that children are sensitive to and are more likely to notice.Therefore,translators must recognize salient and perceptual information from the text and use them to enhance the sound effects of children’s literature.Based on a case study of The Wind in the Willows,this thesis proposes that translators should use various strategies to reproduce,compensate and enhance the effects of sound rhetoric in the translation of children’s literature.Finding equivalent onomatopoeia and interjections(equivalent in sound and equivalent in emotion),compensating untranslatable sound rhetoric with reduplicated words,and enhancing the effects through adding proper four-character Chinese expressions and reduplicated words are feasible strategies to achieve this goal.
