Children’s picture books have gradually entered a golden period of development with the rise of the children’s book industry in Chinese mainland since the new century.Under the call to “telling the Chinese story well”,Chinese literary classics have become a treasure house of resources from which picture books obtain materials,and a large number of revised picture books of Chinese literary classics have emerged in a short period of time.Based on the theory of visual culture and cultural reproduction,this thesis analyzes the new cultural phenomenon of the reproduction of literary classics,and explores the reasons for this phenomenon.At the same time,it summarizes the current strategies and shortcomings of text and pictures used in the revision of picture books so as to reflect on the meaning of cultural reproduction behind this phenomenon,through the analysis of specific cases of revised picture books of literary classics and the comparison of the similarities and differences between the original version and the picture book version.The introduction part first defines the concepts of classic literature,picture books,adaption,and reproduction,then briefly sorts out the development process of the picture book industry in Chinese mainland,and finally summarizes the status quo of the classical literary picture books reproduction.Chapter One explores the external factors of the classical literary picture books reproduction.The rise of visual culture and the capital operation of the consumer society promoted the development of the picture book industry and caused an impact on literary classics at the same time.The combination of literary classics and picture books keeps with the process of renewing the classics of literary classics,and also meets the needs of enhancing the depth of thought,realizing the educational function,and valuing Chinese elements in the picture book production field.Consumers’ recognition of the value of literary classics and the growing popularity of aesthetic tendency of images affect the connection of various elements in the literary production field and promote the emergence of this new phenomenon.Chapter Two explores the actual text modification strategy and image production characteristics in the process of the classical literary picture books reproduction from the internal analysis.In the process of picture book production,on one hand the editor will adjust the text by transforming the style,adapting the plot,and reshaping the characters to make the original version of the literary classic keep with the style of the picture books;on the other hand,the painter will realize dynamic narration in static pictures to pursue visual effects and borrow styles from Chinese paintings,as well as add Chinese elements and present typical Chinese charm in the recreation of pictures starting from scratch.Chapter Three analyzes the interaction of the relationship between pictures and texts based on some examples.The three works Goddess of the Luo River,the Orchid Pavilion,and the Mulan Ballad,in which Luying Ye participated,provided three picture book revision strategies separately:faithful,utilizable and extended,guaranteeing the presentation effect of the works through good interaction between pictures and texts.Chapter Four reflects on the cultural logic behind the phenomenon of classical literary picture books based on the previous analysis and research.Although the current picture books reproduction of Chinese literary classics is insufficient,the combination of literary classics and picture books brings challenges and opportunities to the literary classics itself,creating a positive impact on the reader group and the picture book industry.What’s more,it presents the deep cultural connotations for the Chinese nation by telling the “Chinese story”,fully demonstrating the dynamic activity and the self-renewal of Chinese culture.
