| Christopher Nolan,British director, screenwriter and executive producer. His 10 films released to date have grossed over $4.7 billion worldwide. His films have not only performed well at the box office, but also have a vivid vitality in today’s expanding and changing viewing environment, with significant long tail effects.Following the steady pace of Nolan’s filming, the study of Nolan’s films has expanded and deepened. No longer just emphasizing originality in technique, but also beginning to focus on the genre traditions and conventional patterns behind them.No longer focused solely on narrative research and connotative analysis, but also began to pay attention to the linguistic characteristics of the film,a more comprehensive grasp of Nolan’s films. Its cinematographic work combines personalized creativity with mass comprehensibility, and by balancing the two,it achieves both artistic and commercial success. However, while current research has taken this balance into account,it provides little theoretical support as to how the two can be organically combined and what their purpose and motivation is.Combined with Nolan’s own discourse,it is not difficult to find that the desire to communicate with the audience is precisely his original purpose and goal in making films, and the Reception Theory born in the 1960 s focuses on the interaction between the creator-the work-the recipient, which can precisely provide a schematic analysis of the interactivity of Nolan’s films and provide some help to make up for the deficiencies of existing research. In view of the existing research,it only focuses on the balance of Nolan’s films in the presentation of the results, but neglects the question from which perspective he realizes the balance, the innovation of this paper is that it uses the reception theory to communicate the original intention of Nolan’s creation and the presentation of his films, and to explore the relationship between the two, which has been neglected. This paper draws on reception theory to provide a holistic analysis of Nolan’s films. The first chapter presents basic information about Nolan’s currently released films and their performance at the box office and critically. To better illustrate how the willingness to communicate with the audience intervenes in the creation of the film,Reception Theory as a basic theoretical resource for the thesis of the article is introduced. The second chapter focuses on the balance between market guidance and personal orientation, focusing on creationism. The creator’s filming strategy, personal situation, and character orientation can be specifically presented in the work.Chapter 3focuses on the balance between the principle of popularization and individualized expression, focusing on the relationship between the work and the recipient. It’s the main part of this paper. The comprehensibility of the work in terms of emotional expression,audio-visual language, and storytelling logic provides a guarantee of communication and allows the work to be received more generally. The intentional "deviation" in the relationship between desire and action, individual and society, and time and space can provide impetus for the interactive viewing of the film and prompt the audience to enter the inner world of the film.In summary, this paper,in conjunction with reception theory, specifically analyzes the different performances of Nolan’s films in terms of the rules of the market and the individuality of the creator, the principle of popularization and individualized expression, and observes the delicate balance between them as the basic composition of the paper. And the interaction between creator-worker-recipient communication is both its intrinsic purpose and the secret to achieving balance. |
