In the history of the development of calligraphy in the Qing Dynasty, the Daoguang and Xianfeng period was the latter declined and was gradually replaced by the former. On the basis of Qian-Jia textual research, epigraphy and philology, the style of visiting steles and collecting was becoming more and more popular, which led to the malpractice of “There are many fakes in bronzes” and “people do not learn” during Guang Xu’s time. With the continuous development of the stele tradition, the attack of stele scholars on Guange style calligraphy has become more and more intense.Li Ciming’s Yue Man Tang Diary, which is regarded as one of the four diaries in the late Qing Dynasty, appeared under this background. It includes the valuable historical materials in the periods of Xianfeng,Tongzhi and Guang Xu,and it also reflects Li Ciming’s views on bronze and stone collection and calligraphy. This paper would take this as the research object.Through the analysis of the bronze and stone collection and calligraphy literature in the Yue Man Tang Diary,we can see the main sources of Li Ciming’s collection,so as to explore the characteristics of his collection.Li Ciming’s concept of appreciation and collection has a strong sense of retro, which is reflected in his yearning for the study of Qian Jia,and it is also a tool for him to criticize the shortcomings of the times. This kind of retro consciousness is directly embodied in Li Ciming’s worship of ancient classic arts, and directly affects his calligraphy practice and calligraphy concept.Based on this, this paper holds that Li Ciming’s bronze and stone collection serves his academic research, and his sources and ideas of bronze and stone collection, calligraphy practice and ideas are all reflect his worship of ancient classical art.The calligraphy style of Li Ciming’s Yue Man Tang Diary and his calligraphy works are,to a certain extent, the product of the opposition between Guange style calligraphy and stele style calligraphy. Therefore, his bronze and stone collection and calligraphy thoughts have the dual significance of worshiping ancient classical art and realism.
