| The diglossic competence of urban speech community members is an important part of the national language competence.As language inheritance and development hinges on adolescents,the diglossic use and diglossic competence of the "post-00 s generation" are of particular importance to the development of a bilingual diglossic society in China in the future.Language socialization reveals the process of socialization through language use,and in the meanwhile,emphasizes the impacts of language use in socialization.Based on semi-structured interviews conducted on 60 “post-00s” families located in Shanghai and Shantou,two eastern coastal cities in China,this article examines the diglossic competence,attitude and use of urban “post-00s” youth.In addition,this article analyzes their diglossic acquisition,diglossic usage and the development trend of their diglossic competence from the perspective of language socialization,and compares the differences in language socialization and influencing factors in the two cities,thus probing into the features of language socialization of the urban "post-00s".The article is divided into eight chapters.The first chapter explains the origin of the research by reviewing the research results of bilingualism,diglossic research and language socialization both within China and abroad,and briefly explains the significance and limitation of this article.The second chapter expounds the theoretical basis of language socialization,explains the research questions and methodology adopted in this article,and briefly analyzes the basic information about the interviewed region and the interviewees.Chapter 3 puts forward the standards on classifying different types of diglossic competence,and analyzes the current situation and influencing factors of the diglossic competence of the “post-00s” in Shanghai and Shantou.Chapters 4,5,and 6 contains the comparison on diglossic usage at various stages between Shanghai and Shantou in family,school and public registers,and conducts an in-depth analysis of the approaches through which language socialization takes place.Chapter 7 elaborates on the diglossic attitudes of the "post-00s" in the two cities,explains the causes from the dimensions of cognition,emotion and behavior(tendency),and offers a tentative analysis on the influencing factors.In Chapter 8,the language socialization features of the "post-00s" in the two cities are summarized.This research in this article finds that language socialization of the urban "post-00s" is a continuous phenomenon with different features presented in different age groups.The passive language socialization in the family and school registers is dominant in the early stage,while active language socialization in the family,school and public registers occur simultaneously in the later stage.In addition,the language socialization of "post-00s" is a continuum of dynamic changes.Instead of being static,their dialect and mandarin competences are likely to improve and develop as time goes on.Meanwhile,language socialization is also an adaptable phenomenon presenting distinct differences in different circumstances.The language socialization of "post-00s" is a process during which their adaptations to social culture and their social identities constantly take place.Therefore,diglossic policies should be formulated with the real-life urban language situation being taken into consideration for different groups of language users to effectively promote the balanced diglossic development for the "post-00s" generation. |
