A Report On Escort Interpreting Practice In Meishan Pickle Museum From The Perspective Of The Interpretive Theory

In recent years,under the background of deepening globalization,political,economic,and cultural exchanges among countries have become increasingly frequent,and the forms of communication among countries have become diversified as well,among which tourism exchanges are the most common.There’s a growing number of people who are interested in Chinese culture and come to China for sightseeing.Meishan is a city with rich cultural deposits,which attracts many foreign friends to visit every year.The author received a Pakistani student and guided her to visit Meishan Pickle Museum and acted as an escort interpreter.This report is based on this escort interpreting project.First of all,the author introduces the interpretation task and some situations before,while,and after interpreting.The pre-preparation includes terminology preparation,psychological construction,museum-related background material preparation,and theoretical preparation.Then,the theoretical background and theory-based translation methods are introduced in the theoretical chapter,namely explicitation and gist interpreting.In the on-site interpreting,the author introduces the exact situation and difficulties encountered in the interpretation process.After interpreting,the author analyzes the client’s feedback and reflects on her own performance.Finally,the author conducts discourse analysis on the transcribed data based on the theoretical framework.In this practice report,the author draws the following conclusions:(1)according to the three stages of the triangle model of Interpretive Theory,namely comprehension-devebalization-re-expression,the author adopts corresponding translation methods,namely explicitation and gist interpreting,to make the translation not limited to the original language form;(2)Through the explicitation on two levels,namely semantic level,and sentence cohesion level,culture-loaded words,and proverbs in the original text can be restated in accordance with the target language habits;(3)According to the concept of gist interpreting the author can summarize some enumerations and omit redundant expressions that do not affect the core meaning of the original text under the condition of time pressure so that the translation is concise and clear.This paper hopes to provide a reference for other interpreters through the practice of escort interpreting in Meishan Pickle Museum and offer strategical solutions that may promote the quality and level of escort interpretation in tourism.
