Practice Report On Guide Interpreting In Mount Qingcheng

With expanding communication between countries,foreign tourists interested in Chinese culture flock to China,hoping to learn about this ancient civilization with a long history and Oriental flavor.The number of inbound tourists are increasing,and the tourism industry’s demand and requirements for interpreters are escalating accordingly,because guide interpreters play an important role in promoting the communication between local tour guides and tourists.The author,as a guide interpreter working together with a local Chinese tour guide,managed to complete an interpreting task of the tour commentary for Mount Qingcheng Scenic Spot in October 2020.This practice report reflects on and summarizes the field experience of guide interpreting based on the concept of explicitation.This report can be divided into five parts.The first chapter introduces the task description,including the characteristics of the participants,the analysis of the source text,and the research purpose and importance of this report.Chapter Two is in regard to,firstly,the preparation for interpreting,including preparation of culture,history,terminology and other knowledge;secondly,brief introduction during interpreting,including challenges encountered and countermeasures taken;thirdly,post-interpreting summary,including sorting and summarizing the gains and losses of the interpreting process.The third chapter is literature review,sorting out the domestic and foreign research on guide interpreting and explicitation in interpreting,including previous definitions,classifications,and applications of the concept.Chapter Four is case study focusing on the use of explicitation in the process of task and the reflections on explicitation,namely improving listening skills,highlighting key information and enhancing language quality.Chapter Five sums up the tasks of interpreting practice,including the main research findings and the limitations of the research.Based on the analysis,it can be concluded that the most frequently used explicitation strategies in this interpreting practice seem to be addition,paraphrase and substitution.These explicitation strategies are also often used by other interpreters in contexts or situations where explicitation is necessary.This research aims to facilitate foreign tourists’ better understanding of scenic culture and promote China’s time-honored culture,so as to boost the healthy and sustainable development of China’s tourist attractions and tourism industry at large.
