As an essential basic ability for English learners,good English reading ability is very important for the cultivation of other English abilities.Although people have generally recognized the significance of English reading,there are still some problems in current English reading teaching.At present,the English reading teaching mode in senior high school mainly focuses on teaching knowledge,but students’initiative and interaction in learning activities have not been paid enough attention.At the same time,teachers emphasize the explanation of unfamiliar words and grammar in the text,while they do not fully stress their application in specific situations.This kind of reading teaching mode is not totally conducive to the cultivation of students’interest in English reading and the improvement of their language reading ability.Therefore,it is necessary to explore and use other teaching methods to cultivate students’interest in English reading and enhance students’English reading ability.Suggestopedia put forward by Georgi Lozanov,a psychotherapist,in the 1960s provided a new idea for the development of English reading teaching.Suggestopedia pointed out that people’s suggestibility existed and positive suggestion could make people’s body relaxed and their thinking active.This kind of good physical and mental state enabled learners to give full play to their personal potentials and improve the efficiency of foreign language learning.Suggestopedia put forward six suggestion strategies:establishing authority,infantilization,double-planedness,the change of intonation,the coordination of rhyme and concert pseudo-passiveness.The English reading teaching mode based on Suggestopedia advocated designing teaching procedures by using six suggestion strategies to stimulate students’reading interest and enhance students’reading ability.On the basis of studying relevant literature at home and abroad,the author attempted to explore and reveal the impact of the application of Suggestopedia to English reading teaching on students’English reading learning attitudes and English reading ability under the guidance of psychological theory and the acquisition-learning hypothesis.This study focused on the following two research questions:(1)What changes can Suggestopedia bring to senior high students’attitudes towards English reading learning?(2)What influence can Suggestopedia bring to senior high students’English reading comprehension performances?To answer the above research questions,the author conducted a four-month experiment in Yuzhou No.4 Senior High School from September 1st,2021 to December 27th2021,with112 senior one students as the experimental subjects.Before the teaching experiment,the author used the pre-questionnaire and the pre-test to detect students’attitudes towards English reading and their actual English reading levels respectively.The results of the pre-questionnaire showed that students in two classes had similar attitudes towards English reading.In addition,the results of the pre-test demonstrated that the English reading levels of the students in the two classes were similar,which ensured the feasibility of the experiment to a certain extent.Moreover,the author randomly divided the two classes into the experimental class and the control class.In the experimental class,Suggestopedia was used for English reading teaching.And in the control class,the traditional3P teaching mode was used for reading teaching.After the teaching experiment,the author tested the students in two classes again with the post-test,the results of which revealed that although the English reading levels of students in two classes had made progress,the progress of English reading performances in the experimental class was significantly higher than that in the control class.Meanwhile,the author applied the post-questionnaire to the experimental class and interviewed ten students in the experimental class at random.The results of the post-questionnaire and the interview manifested that students’attitudes towards English reading learning in the experimental class had changed significantly:(1)They had a deeper understanding of the significance of English reading.(2)Their affections for English reading had become more positive.(3)Students’English reading learning behaviors in the experimental class had become increasingly active.The above results demonstrated the effectiveness of applying Suggestopedia to senior high school English reading teaching.This research has provided some implications for English reading teaching in senior high school.Firstly,in the process of English reading teaching,teachers should not only pay attention to the presentation of knowledge,but also focus on students’attitudes towards reading.And teachers should adopt reasonable strategies to attract students to participate in reading activities actively.Secondly,combining the strategies of Suggestopedia with different reading tasks can cultivate students’interest in English reading,improve their English reading learning efficiency and enhance students’English reading ability.
