| In recent years,with the acceleration of the globalization process and the growing closer relationship between countries,the ecological discourse analysis no longer rests on the initial analysis of ecological discourse.The IEDA on the relationship between nations and the construction of national image has gradually attracted the attention of researchers.As the primary research method of eco-linguistics,ecological discourse analysis includes the analysis of ecological discourse and the ecological analysis of discourse.On the basis of the background of the method,He Wei and Wei Rong put forward the transitivity analysis model of international ecological discourse in 2017,trying to analyze the ecological factors in the international ecosystem—country and the relationship between countries to promote the development of the international social ecology sustainably and healthily.This thesis aims to start from the perspective of international eco-discourse to study the construction of national image that affects national relations.Since the outbreak of COVID-19 at the end of 2019,General Secretary Xi Jinping has proposed countermeasures or ways,and expressed his attitude on various occasions.What he conveyed during the pandemic is essential materials for constructing the country’s image and has great significant research value.From the eco-linguistics,IEDA that can reflect the relationship between nations is the more suitable research method.This thesis selects speech texts from the book Xi Jinping’s Important Statements on Coordinating the Covid-19 Response with Economic and Social Development,adopts the principle of stratified random sampling,and selects ten speeches from January to September 2020 in total according to the two dimensions of time and object.According to the transitivity analysis model of international ecological discourse,the author used a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods,under the guidance of international ecological philosophy,analyzing and revealing the images of the country embodied in Xi Jinping’s speeches from three aspects:transitivity process,participant roles,and discourse patterns.The findings are: firstly,as far as the six processes of transitivity are concerned,material processes account for the most of all six processes(70.01%),reflecting the Chinese government and the people’s active response to the epidemic;the second is the mental process(12.94%),which shows that President Xi Jinping’s care and gratitude for the people;the third is the relational process(8.98%),which corresponds to the facts of the pandemic prevention and control actions and the domestic affirmation of the efforts made by foreign people and countries.The verbal,existential,and behavioral processes rank the fourth,fifth,and sixth,respectively(4.39%,3.03%,0.65%).In general,the proportion of clauses is smaller than the above three processes.The reason is that these three processes are not the primary means of expression in the texts.Secondly,the proportion of each participant’s role is quite different.The nonliving social participants accounted for 70.55%,ranking first,showing the specific measures the Chinese government has taken to control the epidemic,treat infected cases,and protect the lives and health of people.Living group participants of human are in second place(24.26%),which shows that President Xi’s primary concern is the people rather than himself;living individual participants of human,nonliving physical participants are the rest,and living group participants of nonhuman takes up the smaller proportion that it is not the focus of the selected discourses.Thirdly,the proportion of discourse patterns is also quite different.The first one is the beneficial discourse(87%),illustrating that President Xi Jinping firmly conveys words beneficial to China’s national image on various occasions;the second one is the ambivalent discourse(13%),which neither follows nor violates the ecosophy,but provides the support for NIC as the presentation of objective facts;destructive discourse is not reflected in the discourse,implying that President Xi Jinping did not convey discourses that violate the ecosophy of “harmony in diversity,mutual love and mutual benefit,” which is conducive to the building of the national image.Fourthly,the national images revealed are: an image of a responsible great power(responsibility for life,responsibility for the people,responsibility for the country itself and its partners);an image of adhering to technological innovation;an image of always contributing to the world;an image of promoting unity and cooperation for a win-win future.Through the study,it is hoped that a modest contribution is made to the extension and expansion of the research on the transitivity analysis model of IED and to help the public understand the construction of national image in Xi Jinping’s speeches during the epidemic. |
