Christopher Dresser(1834–1904)was a 19th-century English botanist,design theorist,and designer.Dresser derives aesthetic aspiration from botany morphology and physiology and develops a unique botany aesthetic thought.Dresser has had already been guiding the design profession and designing a number of products with geometric abstraction and good function since the 1860 s.The major focus of this paper is the development and design expression of Dresser’s plant aesthetic ideas.First,this research analyzes the basis of Dresser’s botanical aesthetics thought in the context of science and aesthetics in the 19 th century,and then it investigates the origin of Dresser’s botanical aesthetics thought by combining the development of the Government School of Design “Art Botany”.According to historical records,this thesis restores Dresser’s career from botanist to designer and organizes his practical work around plant aesthetics.This paper analyzes the fundamental relationship between Dresser’s botanical perspective and aesthetics by organizing Dresser’s theoretical and design works,and expounds the distinctive content and expression characteristics of Dresser’s botanical aesthetics.
