| Popular science animation is a kind of child-oriented product combining popular science texts and acoustic images.As popular science animations are an effective way to popularize science and stimulate children’s interest in exploring science,it is of profound significance to study the translation of children’s popular science animations.This report firstly describes the background,pre-translation preparation,translation process and proofreading work of the translation practice,with the characteristics of the source scripts and the target audience highlighted.Then difficulties are presented in the translation of children’s popular science animations,namely the complexity of popular science texts and the constraints of subtitling.Taking her own translation practice as a case study,the author introduced the principle of child-orientation with its applicability in the translation of children’s popular science animations elaborated.Based on the characteristics of children’s popular science animations,the principle of child-orientation is supplemented while some translation techniques are finally explored.The videos are all from science channels of the famous video website You Tube.They cover a wide range of topics from scientific truths about natural phenomena that people can experience personally in their daily life to astronomy,physics and biology,which are both scientific and literary,and basically can be severed as typical cases of popular science animations.The report finds that when translating children’s popular science animations,translators must always see the information of the source scripts with a grain of salt and apply translation techniques flexibly in an effort to make the translation child-oriented,thus providing children with a better learning and visual experience.In particular,substitution and affirmation can help children who just got familiar with their native language Chinese quickly understand the target text and appreciate the beauty of Chinese language.The omission of insignificant words or phrases and the division of long sentences make the subtitle more concise and confirm to the constraints of time and space.Transference can stimulate children’s curiosity,so that they can learn about the outside world and cultivate an international perspective and cross-cultural awareness.Explicitaion of feelings and attitudes through auxiliary words can add some childish touch to the target text and make it lively,while the explicitation of pronouns and relation between sentences helps manifest implicit information like subjects or logic of sentences to meet children’s expectations and cater to their reading tastes.It is hoped that this report can provide some reference for the translation of children’s popular science animations,and inspire translators to engage in children’s popular science translation so as to educate and entertain children. |
