A Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of Because Internet:Understanding The New Rules Of Language(Chapter5) From The Perspective Of Interpersonal Metafunction

The growth of the Internet has enriched language.The emergence of new forms of language,such as emojis,has increased the diversity of language itself,which has led many experts and scholars to ponder.Because Internet: Understanding the New Rules of Language(hereinafter referred to as Because Internet),written by Canadian linguist Gretchen Mc Culloch,describes the development patterns of language and explores the new expressions of language in Internet era,which is beneficial for people to know the changing rules of language.The systemic functional linguistics includes three metafunctions.The interpersonal function,one of the three metafunctions,refers to the attitudes,identities,status and motivations of the speaker,aiming to construct and maintain social relations for the speaker.Mood and modality are important ways of achieving interpersonal metafunction.This report selects chapter 5 of Because Internet as the research object,on the basis of the interpersonal function,taking interpersonal function of the mood and modality as breakthrough point,intends to analyze the clause translation of declarative,imperative,interrogative and exclamatory.In addition,it sets out to analyze the modality translation of modal adjuncts and modal verbs to realize the interpersonal functions of source texts.In terms of mood,literal translation,free translation,clause conversion and amplification can be used to translate clauses.On the part of modality,literal translation and change of word order are considerable approaches in translating modal verbs and modal adjuncts.In the practice of translation,it is necessary to place material in context,grasp the style of writing,and deal with the translation of mood and modality from the overall perspective.Guided by the interpersonal function,this report summarizes the methods used in translation to offer some implications in exploring the translation of information texts in the future.Furthermore,Because Internet presents a detailed history of language development and changes,so it is conducive to provide some materials for scholars to explore new forms of expressions attached to the evolution of language.However,due to the limited level of mine,some expressions in the translation are still unsatisfactory.
