A Report On The Translation Of Safety Laser Scanner User’s Manual(Excerpts) From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

The report’s research object is the translation practice of user’s manual about safety laser scanner SZ series,provided by KEYNICE company.The author is mainly responsible for the second chapter,which mainly introduces the scanner’s functions and characteristics,including display and indicator light,protection and warning area,reference point monitoring.In the process of translation,the author gains an in-depth knowledge of the industry’s expertise,boasts translation ability,and selects appropriate translation theories to guide the whole process based on the language characteristics of the original text and the particularity of the manual’s readers.Theoretically based on Skopos Theory’s skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule,this report analyzes the difficulties on vocabulary,syntax and discourse encountered in the translation practice,and how to deal with them by appropriate skills and strategies.Based on skopos rule,the author deals with nominalization,passive sentences,and complex sentences.A variety of translation methods are adopted including conversion,voice changes,restructuring,reverse and splitting method,focusing on accurately conveying objective information in the target language.The coherence rule is followed to improve the logical coherence and cohesion of the text.To be specific,the conjunctive relation is flexibly transformed,or the conjunctive is omitted according to the context and semantic relation.Meanwhile,the author appropriately transformed invisible logical relations based on the context.As for abbreviations and professional words,the author follows the fidelity rule to determine their industry meanings through professional dictionaries,parallel texts and consulting professionals,avoiding unnecessary misunderstandings caused by mistranslations.Except various translation methods and skills,the author also uses Yicat,a machine-assisted tool,because there’re a lot of abbreviations,professional words,and some important tables and pictures in it.The purpose of using it mainly includes two aspects.Firstly,it’s to establish a small terminology database with the help of Yicat to improve the translation efficiency about repetitive professional terms,and ensure the consistency of the whole translation of terms.Secondly,it’s convenient to keep the same format of the original text when exporting the translation with it.Under the guidance of skopos theory,the conclusions drawn in this report can provide reference for the subsequent translation practice of parallel text.
