A Report On The Translation Of Set Boundaries,Find Peace:A Guide To Reclaiming Yourself(Excerpts)

This project translates and analyzes the psychological book Set Boundaries,Find Peace,A Guide to Reclaiming Yourself(2021),written by contemporary psychological consultant Nedra Glover Tawwab.Readers will learn how to balance their interpersonal relationships and establish “healthy boundaries” by reading this book.The language is not only scientific,plain and smooth,but also rigorous and objective.What’s more,the case studies put forward by the author enables the plain linguistic style of original text to be more vivid.The objective of this translation task is to fully convey the contextual effect while maintaining the linguistic style of the original text.Meanwhile,it aims to provide reference value for the translation of social science texts form the perspective of Relevance Theory.Relevance Theory in the field of pragmatics is often used in translation studies,which defines communication as an “ostensive – inferential” process.The theory emphasizes contextual effect and audience’s reasoning ability from the cognitive perspective.Therefore,the translator should fully consider the context by the author and target readers,convey the author’s intention as much as possible,and avoid unnecessary processing efforts of the readers so as to achieve the optimal relevance.This translation task mainly analyzes the textual feature of the fifth,sixth and seventh chapters of the original work.Based on clarifying the differences between Chinese and English,way of thinking and cultural background,this paper particularly analyzed the text from the lexical,syntactic and cultural level respectively.This study shows that flexible translation strategies such as amplification,annotation,voice conversion,sentence pattern conversion and word formation are appropriate methods to achieve optimal relevance.This translation report consists of five parts.Chapter One introduces the source text,objectives and significance of this project,and the structure of the report.Chapter Two is about the translation process,including preparation,processing and proofreading.Chapter Three is about the theoretical framework,with a main focus on two communicative processes of translation,the principles,and the literature review of Relevance Theory.Chapter Four is a case study,which analyzes the major difficulties in the translation process and the corresponding translation strategies from the lexical,syntactic and cultural levels.Chapter Five summarizes the reflections and limitations of this task.
