This report is a translation practice report of selected text on popular science, aiming at exploring the translation methods of popular science English texts under the guidance of Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory. The selected text Global Artificial Intelligence Industry White Paper belongs to popular science, which mainly introduces the relevant knowledge about Artificial Intelligence, and the innovative and deep integration of Artificial Intelligence and city development, and the profound changes it brings to finance, education, digital government, medical treatment, unmanned driving, retail, manufacturing, smart city and other industries.Especially, the text displays how the development of Artificial Intelligence impacts research on science and technology across the world.Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory chiefly includes four aspects: lexical equivalence, syntactic equivalence, textual equivalence and stylistic equivalence. The theory believes that literal correspondence should not be sought rigidly in translation. It is necessary to achieve equivalence so that the target language readers can achieve the same effect as the native language readers.Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory breaks the situation of static translation analysis in traditional translation, making the translation standard go beyond the discussion of literal translation and free translation, and thus poses remarkable influence and guidance on translation practice. This paper, guided by Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory, discusses English-Chinese translation strategies of popular science texts from 3 perspectives of vocabulary, sentence and discourse, and explores how Functional Equivalence Theory contributes to the translation of popular science texts with the aim of providing a reference for the Chinese translation of English popular science texts. This translation practice report proves that Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory can be helpful to the translation of popular science texts. And the translation strategies proposed in this report can provide reference for the Chinese translation of science popular texts.
