Translation Of Social Science Texts From The Perspective Of The Adaptation Theory

Running Effective Meetings for Dummies was co-authored by Joseph A.Allen,a meeting scientist and Karin M.Reed,an Emmy award-winning journalist.This book gives specific suggestions on running effective meetings from three aspects which are making meetings more effective before meetings,optimizing efforts during meetings and enhancing performance after meetings.Under the guidance of the adaption theory and taking 3 chapters as translation materials,this report analyzes the translation process of social science texts from four dimensions,that is,contextual correlates of adaptability,structural objects of adaptability,dynamics of adaptability and salience of the adaptation processes.It puts the noteworthy translation problems into four categories:(1)the translation of technical terminologies and culture-loaded words;(2)the translation of complicated sentences such as long and difficult sentences and colloquial ways of express at the syntactical level;(3)the separation from context;(4)inflexible conversion of bilingual thinking.In practical translation,the translator addresses the above problems by applying the following ways:at the lexical level,looking for metaphorical and extended meanings of words to avoid semantic bias and reading barriers;at the syntactic level,adopting different translation techniques,such as amplification,omission,reversion and splitting,to process complicated sentences;at the discourse level,comprehending and interpreting the source text from the perspective of cross-culture and paying more attention to context so as to make the translation more logical.Through this translation practice,the adaption theory proves to be of vital importance to the translation of social science texts.The translator has adopted different translation techniques to analyze the physical world,psychological world,and social world of the original text and incorporated the cultural factors and awareness degree into it so as to make the translation accurate,smooth,and idiomatic.
